The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday evening at the city hall council chambers. The board received five bids for a 2011 Ford F350 Chassis/Cab with a dump bed with the lowest bids from C&E Auto of Salem and Hutcheson Ford Sales of St. James at $32,103. Mayor Gary Brown recommended going with the local bid from C&E Auto, but Alderman Jerry Randell didn’t think the F350 truck was big enough and thought that they might need a F450 instead which would cost about $7,782 dollars more. Water Department Superintendent Jack Emory was not at the meeting to discuss his specs for the truck to see if the F350 was adequate. After a vote of 2-1 against the purchase of the truck, the board agreed to postpone awarding the bid until the next meeting when they could talk with Mr. Emery about the truck. The consent agenda was reviewed and it showed taxes collected from personal property and real estate to be $304,011, and there were sales tax revenues of $84,017 in December. Mayor Brown said that sales tax revenues for the calendar year-to-date were down $38,480.24 from the 2009 sales tax revenues. Brown said that for the month of December, 886 people used the Salem TCRC and 1,496 used the Wellness Center. He said that animal control and nuisance officer Rick Raw has applied to be an apprentice lineman along with Josh Kotschedoff. This will leave an opening for an animal control officer, and the mayor and Chief Steelman feel the filling of that position may need to come from the police department. Brown said that the alderman would hold a workshop to go over the work logs and inventory control forms that he introduced on Thursday, and that a Utility Committee meeting would be held in the near future. The board approved Bill #3212 that allows the mayor to execute a contract with the Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission not to exceed $220,400 to redo the lighting at the Salem Municipal Airport. They also agreed to postpone the reading of Bills 3213-3217 dealing with a number of appointed positions within the city until all four aldermen were present as Alderman Brad Nash was fighting a fire and was not in attendance. The board then approved the reappointment of Joe Brand and Mrs. Clare Dent Underwood to the Salem Housing Authority for an additional four years that would begin February 16^th, 2011. After the bills were approved, the meeting was adjourned.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a theft, a domestic disturbance, property damage, and a burglary. On Tuesday, January 11^th at 12:50 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown entered a residence in the 300 block of North Pershing Street and took items valued $170. On Wednesday, January 12^th at 9:37 a.m. an officer was detailed to the Second Baptist Church in reference to a burglary. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown entered the church and damaged property inside. Later that afternoon at 12:19, an officer was dispatched to the 1100 block of East Center Street in reference to a domestic disturbance. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 19-year old male of Salem for assaulting a 19-year old female of Salem. He was incarcerated pending the application of a warrant. Later that afternoon at 3:02, an officer was detailed to the Salem City Park in reference to some property found by two juveniles. The investigation of the report revealed the juveniles had found a blue bag containing components of a meth lab. The items were recovered and will be analyzed for further investigation. The Missouri Highway Patrol has released their reports involving arrests made in Dent County last week. On Wednesday, January 12^th at 8:50 p.m., 47 year-old James Holweg of Salem was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property less than $500. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and put on a 24-hour hold. On Thursday, January 13^th at 9:31 a.m., 60 year-old Clayton Crews of Salem was arrested on warrants for bad checks from Crawford, Dent, Howell, and Pettis Counties. He was taken to the Howell County Jail. On Saturday, January 15^th at 11:30 p.m., 23 year-old Justin Pryor of Salem was arrested and charged with stealing a motor vehicle and driving while intoxicated. He was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital and put on a 24-hour hold.
