Two accidents happened in Rolla Wednesday within a minute of each other that left two people with serious injuries and two more with moderate injuries, plus one vehicle was involved in both. According to the highway patrol report, an accident happened at 5:50 in Phelps County on Highway 63 about five mile south of Rolla. The first accident happened at 5:50 when a 2007 Ford Fusion driven southbound by 26-year old Nikole Baumgartner crossed the centerline and struck a northbound 2000 Toyota Tacoma driven by 31-year old John Birdsong of Dixon, head-on. A minute later, a northbound Saturn Ion driven by 56-year old Paul Jordan of Rolla struck the 2007 Ford Fusion that was still in the road from the previous accident with Baumgartner still in the vehicle. Baumgartner suffered serious injuries and was flown by Mercy Lifeline to the University Hospital in Columbia. Also suffering serious injuries was John Birdsong who was taken by ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. A passenger in the Toyota, 24-year Caroline Loughridge of St. James, suffered moderate injuries and was flown by Air Evac to Mercy Hospital in St. Louis. Also suffering moderate injuries was Paul Jordan who was taken by ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. The only person wearing a seat restraint in either accident was Paul Jordan. The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, both District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell and District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that their districts received one to four inches of snow so crews were plowing and grading snow, as well as treating slick spots. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles noted that the SACBA Board meeting scheduled for Monday evening was postponed until Monday evening, January 26th. Skiles reminded everyone that there would be no Commissioners meeting on Monday and that the Courthouse would be closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. He went on to say that he would be attending the County Commissioners Board Meeting in Jefferson City on Tuesday. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that on Tuesday February 3rd, a representative from Senator Roy Blunt’s office would conduct a listening post at the Dent County Courthouse from 3:00 to 4:00. Curley went on to say that a copy of the county budget is available for public review and that the county budget hearing would be January 26th at 6:00 pm in the Judicial Building. Presiding Commissioner Skiles noted that the Commission is in discussion about the possibilities of putting a road and bridge sales tax on the April ballot due to increased costs of operating equipment, supplies, and maintaining chip and seal. A representative of Great Rivers Associates was in to get the closing signatures for the bridge project on Dent County Road 3210. Curt Faigle of the 100-Acre Wood Rally met with the Commissioners to finalize plans for the rally that will be held the final weekend of February. The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday at 9:00 at the Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
