The Salem Police Department released more of their reports. On Thursday, January 3rd at 10:05 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 300 block of East Second in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that someone took a lap top computer valued at $800 and a cell phone valued $400 from a residence. On Friday, January 4th at 2:00 in the afternoon, an officer made contact with a 19-year old Rolla male that was under juvenile custody of the State of Missouri and had been reported missing. He was taken into custody and released to juvenile authorities. Later that afternoon at 3:49, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of West Third in reference to property damage. Investigation revealed that someone broke a window of a residence valued at $100. Later that afternoon at 4:37, an officer was dispatched to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation led to the arrest of a 21-year old Salem male for stealing merchandise from the store. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their monthly meeting Tuesday, January 8th at the fire station. After approval of the minutes from the last meeting, the Board reviewed and approved bills, as well as their 2013 budget. After a review and discussion of Fire Chief Brad Nash’s salary, benefits and insurance, a motion was made to increase the health benefits to keep up with current cost increases, and the calendar was then reviewed. During the reimbursement report, Chief Nash noted that currently the District is averaging one call per day. The report for December showed a total of 30 calls were addressed. Chief Nash then reported that Ladder Truck 81 is currently out of service but is scheduled for repair service. A motion was then made and then carried to go into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The Board returned from Closed Session and then set their next meeting for Tuesday, February 5th beginning at 6:00 at the fire station. The meeting was then adjourned.
The Missouri Department of Revenue is cautioning all seniors and disabled Missourians to be aware of possible scams involving the filing of a Property Tax Credit (PTC) claim. Scams involving the PTC, formerly known as the Circuit Breaker Tax Credit, frequently target seniors and the disabled. Scam artists often pose as trustworthy helpers and can be friends, family members, or caregivers. Here are some tips and reminders to help citizens protect themselves from potential fraud. Filing a PTC claim requires personal information, and it is critical that filers know that their tax return preparer is someone they can trust. If not using a professional tax return preparer, filers need to use trusted sources of assistance when filling out claims. Well-established assistance providers include the local Area Agency on Aging, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, Missouri Department of Revenue Tax Assistance Centers, AARP, a local senior center, or other providers of community services to older adults or people with disabilities. If someone asks for information to help you with a benefits application, make sure they can explain why that information is needed and how it will be used once the application has been completed. The State of Missouri never charges filers a fee to apply for a PTC. Neither Medicare nor Medicaid information is required to complete a PTC. Be wary of people coming to your home with offers involving the PTC that seem too good to be true. The Missouri PTC is a credit for certain senior citizens and 100 percent disabled individuals for a portion of the real estate taxes or rent they paid during the previous year. The credit is for a maximum of $750 for renters and $1,100 for owners who owned and occupied their home. The Hillsboro Hawks outscored the Salem Tigers 20-10 in the 4th quarter en route to a 51-48 come from behind victory in the first round of the St. James Tournament. Salem led throughout the game until late in the 4th quarter. Salem was led in scoring by Chad Elliott with 19 points followed by Cody Whitaker with 13 points and Brady Floyd with 10. Salem falls to 5-8 on the year and will face Newburg Thursday night at 6:00 at St. James.
The 17th ranked Missouri Tiger basketball team will host the Georgia Bulldogs tonight in an SEC matchup. Missouri is 12-3 on the year and you can hear the game on KSMO at 6:30.
