The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of December. During the month, they wrote 20 traffic tickets, 12 warning tickets and three equipment repair orders. They served 15 summons to appear in court and four fugitive warrants. The Salem Police Department investigated 21 accidents, two assaults, one domestic assault and one report of driving while intoxicated. The Police Department also investigated 13 reports of stealing, eight reports of property damage, three burglaries, one report of a forgery, two reports of counterfeiting, one report of unlawful use of a weapon and one report of disorderly conduct. They investigated one report of possession of marijuana and two reports of possession of synthetic drugs. The Salem Police received 1,388 calls for service during the month and handled 69 walk-ins to the station. The Salem Police Department redirected 65 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 19 hours in court testifying, eight hours as court bailiff and spent eight hours teaching D.A.R.E. The calls in December included 37 calls for escorts, eleven 9-1-1 calls, two calls for an intoxicated driver, three calls for peace disturbances, 14 ambulance assist calls, one call for a prowler, five calls for alarms sounding, four calls for fights in progress, five domestic dispute calls, two calls for an intoxicated pedestrian, one fire call and five wreckers were needed. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 10,378 miles during the month of December. The Salem Police Department arrested 21 males and 5 females during the month of December.
On Thursday, January 10th, 21-year old Alex Walker and 21-year old James Trawick were arrested and both face felony charges of property damage in the 1st degree for the vandalism of grave headstones at the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem. Bond was set at $5,000. The two allegedly toppled 39 headstones with at least one that was chipped. Although the city-owned cemetery has incurred vandalism in the past, this incident involved much more widespread damage.
The Salem Police Department released their reports involving traffic stops, assault and an active warrant. On January 6th at 1:07 in the morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation the led to the arrest of a 24-year old Salem male for a DWI. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. At 5:37 the same morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 20-year old Salem male for a DWI. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On January 7th at 9:20 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the Salem High School in reference to an assault. The report led to the arrest of a 17-year old male and a 15-year old male juvenile both of Salem for assault. The 17-year old was issued a summons to appear in court and released. The juvenile was released to his parents and the report will be forwarded to the juvenile officer. On January 9th at 11:31 in the morning, an officer made contact with a 24-year old Salem female that had an active warrant for arrest from Phelps County. She was placed under arrest and incarcerated pending extradition from Phelps County.
Children in the Ozarks Region can learn about their natural and cultural heritage through a new youth program, “The Ozark Kids’ Connection”(OK) at the Bonebrake Center of Nature and History. This brand new program is funded for 2008 by the L-A-D and Ozark Natural Resources Foundations. A professional resource interpreter and member of the Bonebrake Board of Trustees, Jamin Bray will coordinate the program. The vision of the OK program is to connect kids in grade K-5 with the nature and history of the Ozarks through a variety of interactive hands-on learning experiences. Activities planned over the next year include visits to area schools, outdoor learning experiences and regular monthly youth learning days at the Bonebrake Center. Some specific program topics include: special plants of the Ozarks, trees, Ozark forests and streams, recycling, outdoor fun in the Ozarks, and Ozark folklore just to name a few. The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers moved to 12-3 on the year with a 62-23 win over Owensville last night. Natalie Howard scored 16 points and Allison Jones added 13 as the Lady Tigers will travel to Licking Friday night to face the Lady Wildcats starting at 6:00 with the JV game.
The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers outscored the St. James JV, 23-2 in the first quarter and rolled over the JV Tigers Monday night, 76-21. Zach Pitchford scored 31 points for Salem who moved to 11-5 with the win. Cody Wofford and C.J. Smith each added 11 points in the Tiger victory. Salem will face Fatima in the semi-final Friday night starting at 8:00 and the winner of the game will play in the championship game Saturday night at 8:00, and the loser will play in the third place game Saturday at 6:30.
The Missouri Basketball Tigers will be on the road at Iowa State tonight looking for their 12th win of the year. You can hear the Big 12 contest on KSMO Radio starting at 6:30.
The St. Louis Blues will be on the road at Chicago to face the Blackhawks. KSMO will join the game in progress at the conclusion of the Missouri Basketball game. The Blues have lost two straight games after winning three straight.

Graveside services for Michael Schuettenberg of Bridgeton, Missouri, age 47, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Northlawn Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Cater Funeral Home in Moberly, MO.
Funeral services for Sara F. Hanes of St. James, age 80, will be held Saturday, January 19th at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will also be Saturday from 10:00 am until service time. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery.
Memorial services for Charlene Dee Buchanan of Steelville, age 37, will be held Saturday at 3:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 1:00 until service time.
Funeral services for Ralph H. Tyree of Salem, age 96, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will also be from 11:00 am until time of service. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
