The band “Midnight Flight” won the award for the Traditional Bluegrass Band of the Year at the 33rd annual Midwest SPBGMA Bluegrass Music Awards in Jefferson City. Midnight Flight is comprised of Gerald Jones, Andrew Dye, James Rinck, Roger Matthews and Jimmie Allison. Congratulations!

Trooper Justin L. McCullough was promoted to the rank of Corporal and designated the Assistant Zone Commander of Zone 7 in Dent County. On January 7th. Corporal McCullough is a native of Jackson, Missouri and a 1996 graduate of Jackson High School. He is also a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice. Corporal McCullough was appointed to the Highway Patrol Academy in 2001 and upon his graduation was assigned to Crawford County in Troop I. Corporal McCullough received a work recognition award for making the most felony arrests in Troop I in 2002 and also received the Mothers Against Drunk Driving Award in 2003 for leading the Troop in DWI arrests.

Because of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday today, the post office will not be in service, the Dent County License Bureau will be closed, the city administrative offices will be closed, the Dent County Courthouse will be closed and most of the banks will be closed.

The Salem Area Community Betterment Association (SACBA) will hold it’s annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner to honor volunteer citizens and organizations on Tuesday February 27th. The dinner will be held at The Commons at 6:30 pm. Tickets may be purchased at The Salem News, the SACBA office at the Visitors Center and from SACBA board members. Nominations for the Gift of Time awards and the Gift of Time Honor Roll are being sought. The categories for volunteer recognition are: education, community enhancement, arts and culture, youth (an adult or adult organization), youth (a youth or youth organization), humanitarianism, and historic preservation. Any citizen may nominate any individual and/or organization that has made a significant volunteer contribution to the community during 2006. An anonymous panel of citizens will select the Gift of Time awardees. The Gift of Time awards will be presented and all nominees will be honored at the Volunteer Recognition Dinner. Nomination forms are available at the Salem Public Library, The Salem News, the Bank of Salem, US Bank, Progressive Ozark Bank and Town & Country Bank. No SACBA Board Members, SACBA project or SACBA committee is eligible for nomination. Nominations must be submitted by no later than Wednesday, January 31st by 5:00 pm to the SACBA, Box 732, Salem, MO. 65560.

The Salem Public Library Older Adult Program will be held Tuesday at 10:00 on “Unforgettable Fashions.” The program is designed for adults 50 and over, and all are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served.

The Salem Tigers destroyed the Cabool Bulldogs Friday night by the score of 70 to 47. Taylor Sirois scored 21 points to lead the Tigers followed by Solomon McNeal with 14 points and Brad Lewis with 11. Salem is now 7-7 on the year and 1-0 in the SCA, and they will play Rolla tonight at the St. James Tournament starting at 6:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO.

The Kansas City Chiefs on Friday announced that the team has agreed in principle to a five-year contract extension with tight end Tony Gonzalez. The 30-year-old played in his 10th NFL season last year, all with Kansas City, and played in 15 games. He was the team's leading receiver with 73 catches for 900 yards and he also reached the end zone five times.

Clent Stewart tallied 19 points, one of five players in double figures, as the Kansas State Wildcats slipped by the Missouri Tigers by a score of 85-81 in Big 12 Conference action from Mizzou Arena. The Tigers (11-5, 0-3) were led by Marshall Brown who recorded a game-high 28 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the floor, followed by Jason Horton and Leo Lyons with 13 and 10 points, respectively, in the team's third straight setback. Missouri will face Kansas tonight at 7:30 on KSMO.

Doug Weight and Dennis Wideman each had a goal and two assists to help the St. Louis Blues to a 6-5 win over the Los Angeles Kings at Scottrade Center. Keith Tkachuk and Lee Stempniak each had a goal and an assist for the Blues, who have won three straight games. Manny Legace finished the game with 27 saves. It was also announced on Saturday that Bill Guerin will represent St. Louis in the All-Star game. The Blues will be in Phoenix today for an afternoon contest starting at 3:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced Friday that they avoided arbitration with Randy Flores by signing the reliever to a two-year contract.

Funeral services for Allen Bray of Rolla, age 88, will e held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 9:00 in the morning Tuesday until service time. A Masonic services will be held at 10:00 Tuesday morning. Interment will be in the Vienna Public Cemetery in Vienna, Missouri. Memorials may be made to the Forty Wyman Baptist Church.

Funeral services for Helen Ethel Francis of Steelville, age 83, will be held Tuesday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Chapel in Steelville. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 today. Interment will be in the Freeman Cemetery in Cherryville.

A memorial service for Wendall L. Venn of Salem, age 72, will be held Wednesday morning at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Full military honors will be presented and memorials may be made to the Dent County Animal Shelter or the Phelps County Hospice.

Funeral arrangements for Evelyn Simmons of Rolla are incomplete at this time but are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

Funeral arrangements for George Laun of St. James, age 92, are incomplete at this time but are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.
