A rural Rolla man is charged with killing his stepson Tuesday night just after 9:00 along State Route F. As a result of the investigation by the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department, 43-year old James D. Loughridge of Rolla was arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder and Armed Criminal Action in the death of 21-year old Jamie M. Guill of Rolla. According to the sheriff’s department, Loughridge had been drinking with Guill and another man when Loughridge began joking around with a rifle. According to the report, Guill was shot in the head when he tried to grab the gun. His body was found in a ditch near Phelps County Road 4110. Loughridge is being held in Phelps County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bond and the investigation is ongoing.

The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was held Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 5490 and 5530. He also said that the other workers would be working in the Road and Bridge Department Building. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson reported that workers would be cutting some brush and removing down trees in the Sligo and Boss areas, and brush cutting would be done on Dent County Road 2110. He went on to say that workers would also be helping with the work on the building. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that there would not be a Commissioner’s meeting on Monday as the courthouse will be closed for Martin Luther King Day. He said he would be attending a County Commissioner Association meeting next Wednesday in Jefferson City. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that copies of the preliminary budget are now available to the public in her office. The commissioners then set their budget hearing and quarterly meeting for January 24th at 7:00 at the Judicial Building. At the last meeting, the commissioners approved the bid from Dowd Supply Company for the purchase of 200 grader blades for $16,790 and that bid included delivery. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday, January 20th at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a disturbance, mental commitment order, property damage, and assault. On Saturday, January 8th at 11:13 p.m. an officer on patrol discovered a disturbance in the 1500 block of South Maple Street involving a vehicle in the roadway. Further investigation led to the arrest of a 46-year old male of Salem for domestic assault and driving while intoxicated. He was issued summons to appear in court and was incarcerated. On Sunday, January 9th at 8:45 p.m. an officer transported a 30-year old female of Salem to the Ozark Medical Center in West Plains in lieu of a mental commitment order. Later that night at 9:55 p.m. an officer was detailed to the 200 block of South Pershing Street in reference to property damage. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown broke the side glass on a red 2000 GMC truck. The value of the damage is approximately $100. On Tuesday morning, January 11th at 9:48, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to an assault. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 29-year old male of Salem for assaulting a 27-year old male of Salem. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Kristy Bermudez only basket of the game came at the buzzer to give the Salem Tigers a come from behind 37-35 win over the Cabool Lady Bulldogs. Bermudez took the inbound pass too far under the basket to shoot with 3.5 seconds left and moved to her left and was able to get the shot off as the horn sounded to help Salem to a 2-1 record in the SCA and 6-8 overall. Salem was led in scoring by Jennifer Herndon with 14 points and Alayna Sellers with 11 points. Salem will host Owensville Tuesday.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will be in Ava tonight starting at 6:00 with the JV contest with the varsity game to follow. You can hear the varsity game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com. Salem enters the game with a 2-8 record.

Ryan Reaves scored the eventual game-winner in the second period, and the Blues dumped the Kings, 3-1. Jaroslav Halak made 24 saves to stop St. Louis' five-game slide, while B.J. Crombeen, and Alexander Steen each chipped in goals for the victors. St. Louis will play in San Jose Saturday night at 9:30 on KSMO.

The Missouri Tigers will play Texas A & M Saturday starting at 11:30 on KSMO Radio. Missouri enters the game with a 14-2 record.

The Cleveland Browns named Pat Shurmur as the team's new head coach Thursday afternoon. Shurmur spent the past two seasons as the offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams, who engineered a turnaround from 1-15 in 2009 to 7-9 and the brink of a playoff berth in 2010.

The City of Salem Winter Youth Basketball Program signups are today at the Salem Freedom Activity Center located at 1201 West Rolla Road in the Foyer from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. The cost is $15 per child. The Winter Youth Basketball Program is for boys and girls currently enrolled in the 1st through 6th grades. Interment for Cordell “Corky” Callahan of St. James, age 90, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Freeman Cemetery in Cherryville with Full Military Honors. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

Funeral services for Susie Bailey of Salem, age 69, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Pleasant Union Methodist Church in Reynolds County. Interment will be in the Polk Cemetery in Reynolds County. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem.

Graveside service for Violet Bowers of Salem, age 94, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Pontiac Cemetery in Gainesville. All arrangements are under the direction of the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Helen Dobkins of Sevierville, TN, formerly of Steelville, age 94, will be held Monday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held Sunday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Funeral services for Jamie Dustin Guill of Rolla, age 21, are incomplete at this time but are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary. Memorials may be made to the family of Jamie Dustin Guill.
