The Dent County Fire Protection District released a report for Sunday, January 10th at 12:29 in the early morning as 12 firefighters were dispatched to Highway 32 West to the American Auto Parts and Stricklin Radiator Building owned by Ray Cline, as smoke was coming from the building. Upon arrival, 12 firefighters found a one-story wood frame commercial structure with heavy smoke coming from the roof and eaves. Upon further investigation, there was an active fire in the building and the electric and natural gas were requested shut off. Mutual Aid was requested from the Jadwin Fire Department for manpower. The structure was then vented and Mutual Aid was also requested from the Lenox and Montauk Departments. The natural gas was turned off at 1:04 am and the city utilities were on the scene at the same time. The fire went through the roof at 1:21 am and Montauk and Jadwin Fire Departments arrived on the scene at 1:32 am, at which time the building was fully involved. The Lenox Fire Department arrived at 1:40 and the Department of Natural Resources were contacted at 2:14 am as well as the City of Salem Emergency Management Director Allen Kimrey. The Fire Marshall arrived on the scene at 9:42 that morning and began investigating the cause of the fire. The subzero temperatures inhibited fire attack due to freezing of water and pumps. The Dent County Fire Protection District units were back in service at 2:00 that afternoon.

A reminder that Missouri State Auditor Susan Montee will report on the state audit on the City of Salem tonight at 7:00 at the Salem City Hall Auditorium. She will report on the findings of her staff and discuss recommendations made to the city by State Auditor Montee and members of her staff. They will also answer questions about the audit report and their findings. The audit will cost the city of Salem about $30,000. The hearing tonight is open to everyone.

An accident occurred at 5:00 Wednesday evening in Phelps County on County Road 3610 about two miles east of St. James. According to the highway patrol report, a 1998 Mercury Sable driven by 28-year old Michael Reinbott of Salem, drove off the left side of the roadway, struck a fence and concrete retaining wall before coming to rest blocking the roadway. Reinbott suffered moderate injuries and was transported by St. James ambulance to Phelps County Regional Medical Center. An occupant in the vehicle, 18- year old Adam Eubanks of St. James, suffered minor injuries and declined treatment at the scene. Both were wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Mercury Sable sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Spurgeon’s.

The Meramec Regional Planning Commission will hold their regular meeting tonight at the MRPC office located at #4 Industrial Drive in St. James beginning at 7:30 pm. After approval of the consent agenda and several contracts, time has been set aside for an exchange of ideas between Board members and Federal Legislators representing the Meramec Region. Darrell Skiles will then report on the Housing Advisory Board meeting, Kraig Bone will report on the Meramec Regional Emergency Planning Committee meeting, Tom Klebba will report Business Loan activities, and Connie Willman will report on the Meramec Community Enhancement Corporation Board meeting held December 15th. T.R. Dudley will then report on workforce development activities and Chairman Laura Antolak and Director Richard Cavender will report on issues of interest. The regular meeting of the MRPC is open to the public.

Wednesday at the January Chamber Membership meeting there were three new Chamber Board Members elected. They were Tony Floyd from Intercounty Electric, Carol Lacy from the Salem Memorial District Hospital and Stacy Medlock from the Bank of Salem. New Chamber Board officers will be elected at the January Board meeting that is scheduled to be held on Thursday the 21st of January.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will host the Willow Springs Lady Bears tonight in SCA play. Salem is 8-5 on the year and 2-0 in the SCA. The JV will start things out at 6:00 followed by the varsity game and you can hear it on KSMO radio and online at ksmoradio.com.

The St. Louis Blues will host the Minnesota Wild tonight at the Scottrade Center. The Blues have won two straight. You can hear the game at 7:00 and continued after Salem Lady Tiger Basketball.

Kim English registered a double-double with 20 points and a team-best 10 rebounds as he helped lead the Missouri Tigers to a thrilling 94-89 overtime win against the Texas Tech Red Raiders in Big 12 Conference play at United Spirit Arena. Also scoring in double figures for the Tigers (14-3, 2-0 Big 12) was Marcus Denmon with 20 points off the bench, followed by Zaire Taylor who posted 12 points before fouling out. Michael Dixon chipped in 11 points, Justin Safford and Laurence Bowers 10 apiece, with the latter also grabbing nine rebounds and blocking four shots in a reserve role as the team won its ninth in a row. Missouri will play at Oklahoma Saturday at 11:30.

Former Milwaukee Brewers manager Ned Yost has joined the staff of the Kansas City Royals. The 54-year-old Yost will work as the club's special advisor to baseball operations.

The Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly hired Romeo Crennel as defensive coordinator. The 62-year-old Crennel, who was head coach of the Cleveland Browns from 2005-08, will be reunited with offensive coordinator Charlie Weis and Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli. The trio worked together in New England and teamed to win three Super Bowls.

The City of Salem Winter Youth Basketball Program is just around the corner. Sign-ups will be held today and Friday, January 14th and 15th from 4:00 to 6:00. All sign-ups will be held in the front lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center (formerly the National Guard Armory.) This program is for all boys and girls that are currently enrolled in the 1st-6th grades. The cost is $15.00 per child.
