The Salem Police Department released their reports for over the weekend. On Friday, January 9th at 9:00 a.m. an officer was sent to the 400 block of West Fourth Street in reference to property damage. The report revealed that between January 8th at 4:00 p.m. and January 9th at 9:00 a.m. a vehicle had struck a flower box causing damage to the box. The box was valued at $400.00. On Friday, January 9th at 7:22 p.m. an officer was dispatched to the 1000 block of Highway 32 to a business lot in reference to open alcohol containers in a vehicle. The report led to the arrest of a 24-year old Salem man for possession of an open alcohol container. He was issued a summons to appear in court on released on the summons. On Saturday, January 10th at 11:38 p.m. an officer was detailed to the 1000 block of East Pace in reference to a domestic disturbance. The report led to the arrest of a 45-year old Salem man for domestic assault and trespassing. He was incarcerated pending the issuance of a warrant. Anyone with any information regarding the thefts, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department reports that a domestic assault was reported at 2:03 Sunday morning at a rural county residence. The report stated that a son had assaulted his mother and cause d about $100 worth of damage to the home before leaving the residence. Another call came in for a domestic violence report Sunday evening at 7:30 at a residence in Bunker. No arrests were made in either case. The sheriff’s office also stated that on Saturday morning at 1:42, a report came in stating that a number of mailboxes have been flattened off Route P, and three county road signs have apparently been stolen in the area of Dent County Road 5010, 5070 and 5380 also off of Route P.

The 2009 Rally America will be held the weekend of February 27th and 28th in Salem. This is a national event. Salem is the headquarters for this event, making it essential that Salem provide the accommodations needed for Rally America to continue their event in Salem. An accident occurred at 12:03 early Tuesday morning in Washington County on Route C on Drew Road. According to the highway patrol report, 22-year old Justin Carl of Steelville failed to negotiate a curve while driving a 2005 Chevrolet 1500 while traveling eastbound. The Chevy traveled off the right side of the roadway and collided with a ditch. Carl suffered serious injuries and was taken by Washington County Memorial by Washington County ambulance. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet 1500 was totaled in the accident and removed from the scene by Elliot Motors.

The Salem Area Community Betterment Association “Gift of Time” Awards Banquet will be held on Thursday, February 19th at the Commons beginning at 6:30 pm. The Salem Area Community Betterment Association will host their annual volunteer recognition dinner, honoring citizens and organizations, who have significantly enhanced the quality of this community. The dinner will be catered by My Place Restaurant. Nominations are currently being sought for volunteers. Categories for nomination include arts and culture, community enhancement, education, historic preservation, humanitarianism, a youth category for an adult or adult organization, and a youth category for a youth or youth organization. Nomination forms are now available at the Salem Library, Salem TCRC and all the banks in town. Nominations must be submitted by 5:00 January 31st. You can send your nomination form to SACBA, P.O. Box 732, Salem, MO 65560. Tickets to the event are now available at the Salem TCRC, the Visitor’s Center and from individual Salem Area Community Betterment Association Board Members. C.J. Smith scored 27 points but it wasn’t enough as Salem dropped a 71-60 decision to Sullivan Tuesday night. Salem also had double-digit scoring from Phillip Moser with 15 points and Grant Gordon with 12 points. Salem falls to 5-8 on the year and will host Houston Friday night in their first SCA game of the year.

Mike Cammalleri scored two goals to lead the Calgary Flames to a 3-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues at Saddledome. Dan Hinote scored the only goal for the Blues, who have dropped two straight and five of their last seven contests overall. Chris Mason allowed three goals on 34 shots in the losing effort. The Blues will face Colorado Thursday night at 7:30 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

The Missouri Basketball Tigers will host Colorado tonight at the Mizzou Arena starting at 7:30 with the pre-game show and tip-off at 8:00. Missouri is 13-3 on the year and 0-1 in the Big 12. The Tigers will be without Leo Lyons who was suspended for not paying traffic violations. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

The Winter Youth Basketball signups for boys and girls in the 1st through 6th grade will be held Thursday and Friday from 4:00 to 6:00 at the Salem Freedom Activity Center. Another signup will be held on Thursday, January 22nd and Friday, January 23rd also from 4:00 to 6:00 at the Salem Freedom Activity Center. The cost is $15.00 per child. These will be the only signups for the basketball program. For more information, call 729-6290.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers team members achieved academic All-State honors this year by having a GPA average of 3.60 or higher. Those girls include Hannah Kettner, Lisa Brun, Jessica Brand, Rachel Sirois, Houlie Ibrahim, Jenna Cartwright, Amy Huitt and Alayna Sellers. The team also obtained the MSHSAA Outstanding Scholastic Achievement Award with a combined GPA of 3.869. Congratulations Tigers!!!

Funeral services for Delbert Lee Martin of Salem, age 65, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

Funeral services for Arnold Dunn of Steelville, age 87, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Funeral services for Verna Mae “nee Martin” Schneider of Black, age 60, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Viburnum Chapel. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 Thursday. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Sherwood Forest Camp in St. Louis.

Graveside services for James F. Murray of Salem, age 84, will be held Friday at 1:15 at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.
