The Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, both District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell and District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said workers would be out checking roads for slick spots and treating those areas that are icy. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported he attended the Public Housing Authority board meeting Thursday and they reviewed the clean audit report received from the auditors. The report shows there are 86 HUD units in Dent County, and for the entire MRPC Region there are 676 HUD units. In the External Relations Board meeting, Skiles said the MRPC Day in Jefferson City would be held on January 27th where MRPC members would be there to discuss legislative issues with state senators and representatives. In the Meramec Regional Planning Commission meeting, the commission visited with federal legislative representatives. Their concerns included the future of Fort Leonard Wood, the Affordable Care Act revisions, and keeping the BRO fund program in place, while Senator Blunt’s staff pushed the Market Place Fairness Act that helps entities collect sales taxes from Internet sales. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said she was continuing her work on the 2015 budget. Dent County Collector Dennis Medlock came in and brought in the monthly collections report for December. It showed that the collector took in a record $5,016,019.83 this past December. In December of 2013, the collector took in a total of $4,869,133.23. For the entire 2014 year, his report shows that a total of $6,984,127.79 was collected from 17,905 different accounts. In December of 2014, 10,889 accounts paid taxes. Medlock stated that 82.95% of the Personal Property taxes billed out have been received for 2014 while 91.03% of the Real Estate Property taxes billed out have been paid. Medlock credits that increase in Real Estate tax collections due to new laws requiring real estate loans to include a tax escrow account to pay the taxes at the end of the year. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at the courthouse starting at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

Volunteers for AARP will be conducting free tax filing assistance at the Salem Community Center@ the Armory computer lab again this year. This free tax filing assistance will begin on Friday, February 6th and continue every Friday until April 10th. To schedule your appointment, you may call the Salem Community Center @ the Armory at 729-8163. Tax assistance appointment times on February 6th are almost all taken as of Monday, January 12th. All appointments are scheduled on a first come, first served basis. The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers are trained in filing certain tax forms and schedules, including the Form 1040. However, the Volunteer Protection Act requires that our volunteers stay in the scope of the program. If counselors feel they do not have adequate knowledge or your return is too complex, you may need to seek out another qualified counselor or you will need to get paid tax assistance. Items you need to bring to have your tax returns prepared include Proof of identification such as a picture ID, Social Security Cards for you, your spouse and dependents or a Social Security Number verification letter issued by the Social Security Administration. Also needed are birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents on the tax return. Wage and earning statements such as Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, 1099-Misc from all employers must be brought. Year-end Social Security Statements showing your total Social Security received and Medicare payments for the year need to be brought with you as well. You should also bring with you any interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099-INT or 1099-DIV). A copy of last year’s federal and state returns would be very helpful for the tax preparation, if it is available. You will also need to bring proof of bank account routing numbers and account numbers for Direct Deposit, such as a blank check or deposit slip. To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms. The Salem Community Center @ the Armory is located at 1200 W. Rolla Road. If you would like to assist people in preparing their 2014 taxes, volunteers are still needed. If you would like to volunteer to help, please call Tyson Richards at 453-4995.
