On Thursday, January 9th the Dent County Sheriff’s Office received a report from the Division of Family Services in reference to the alleged rape of a 15-year old female. The investigation led to a search warrant being conducted at a residence near the 200 block of County Road 6680. As a result of the investigation, 63-year old Ronald L. Conklin of Salem was arrested on charges of 1st degree rape, 2 counts of 2nd degree statutory rape, and 2nd degree statutory sodomy. Conklin is currently being held in the Dent County Jail on a $150,000 cash only bond.

Mark Twain National Forest is looking for campground managers to operate some national forest campgrounds, their associated recreation areas, and one rental cabin. Most recreation sites operated by Mark Twain National Forest have had volunteer campground hosts helping with visitor information and contacts, cleaning, doing light maintenance, and, in some cases, mowing. The Forest Service is seeking proposals from potential recreation managers to operate and maintain one or more of the recreation sites in the area. The proposed areas include Lane Spring off of Hwy 63 south of Rolla; Loggers Lake near Bunker; Red Bluff on Huzzah Creek off Highway V in Crawford County; the Sinking Creek Cabin at the base of a historic fire tower in Carter County; and Watercress Campground on the Current River in Van Buren. Most of the sites are located along rivers or lakes. Many include picnic areas, boat launches, or other day use sites as well as a campground. Campground managers are encouraged to provide additional goods and services such as firewood, water, and ice sales, boat rentals and educational or interpretive programs as a way to increase their income and to better serve visitors. Selected applicant(s) will be authorized to collect camping and day use fees from recreationists and pay a small percentage fee to the forest. In return, site managers will maintain campsites and other facilities, including but not limited to maintenance and cleaning of toilets, trash collection, mowing, cleaning campsites and making minor improvements to keep the area safe for users. Copies of the prospectus are available in a link from the feature article on the website at www.fs.usda.gov/mtnf/, or by writing Forest Supervisor, 401 Fairgrounds Road, Rolla, MO 65401; by calling 573-364-4621 or dropping by the nearest District Ranger Office. Anyone interested in being a Mark Twain National Forest recreation manager, or concessionaire, should submit proposals by close of business January 29, 2014. Approved managers will start operations no later than May 15, 2014. The selection of successful applicants should be made by February 20, 2014.

All Dent County residents are asked to submit a vote for the 2014 Dent County Extension Council election, which ends today. Ballots may be obtained in person at the Dent County Extension office, which is in the Judicial Building located at 112 East 5th Street. Office hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. You may also vote online at http://extension.missouri.edu/dent/home.aspx.

Troop I of the Missouri State Highway Patrol is pleased to announce a 34 percent reduction in traffic fatalities for the six county area for 2013 when compared to 2012. In 2013, Troop I officers investigated 24 fatal traffic crashes, while other law enforcement agencies within the boundaries of Troop I investigated crashes that resulted in five fatalities. The 2013 total of 29 traffic fatalities is 15 less than the 44 traffic fatalities that occurred in Troop I the previous year. Preliminary statistics show that statewide traffic fatalities dropped from 826 in 2012 to 755 last year. These same stats indicate there was a decrease in total number of traffic crashes last year in Missouri, when compared to 2012.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has also released a couple arrest reports for Dent County. At 8:27 New Year’s Eve night, 22-year old Andrea Hodges of Salem was arrested on a felony Crawford County warrant for dangerous drugs. She was taken to the Dent County Jail. On Friday, January 3rd at 3:25 in the afternoon, 29-year old Scott Coomer of Licking was arrested on a felony probation violation warrant and also charged with speeding, no valid license, and no insurance. He was then taken to the Dent County Jail.

Cody Whitaker scored 20 points to lead the Salem Tigers to a 3rd place finish in the Owensville Tournament with a 52-46 win over the Linn Wildcats. Zayne Kyser netted 12 points in the win that came on the heels of a 56-27 loss to Sullivan Friday night. Salem is now 4-5 on the year and they will be in Sullivan on Tuesday night.

Salem has been seeded 7th in the St. James Tournament and they will face Blair Oaks in the first game of the tournament next week.

Savannah Hanning scored 21 points to help the Salem Lady Tigers beat the Bunker Lady Eagles on Friday, 64-56. Payton Curley had 18 points while Cortney Putman added 11 points for the Lady Tigers, who move to 4-7 on the year. Salem will host the Ava Lady Bears tonight at the SHS gym with the JV to start at 6:00 and the varsity to follow. You’ll be able to hear the varsity game on KSMO Radio, and online at ksmoradio.com and see the game on Fidelity Local 6.

Mike Santorelli's goal early in the third period lifted the Vancouver Canucks over the St. Louis Blues, 2-1, on Friday. Alex Pietrangelo scored for the Blues, who had a seven-game winning streak stopped. Brian Elliott turned aside 20-of-22 shots. The Blues will host the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday at the Scottrade Center.

Jordan Clarkson netted a team-high 20 points, as No. 21 Missouri earned a hard-fought 70-68 victory over Auburn on Saturday at Auburn Arena. Earnest Ross supplied 16 points and seven rebounds, while Jabari Brown added 15 points for Missouri (13-2, 1-1 SEC), which bounced back from an overtime loss to Georgia in its conference opener. Missouri will play at Vanderbilt on Thursday.

Missouri junior tailback Henry Josey has decided to bypass his final year of eligibility and declare for the 2014 NFL Draft. Josey finished the season with 1,166 yards rushing and ranked second in the Southeastern Conference with 16 touchdowns. He is only the second Mizzou running back to post two 1,000-yard seasons, as he ran for 1,168 yards and nine touchdowns as a sophomore in 2011 before sustaining a season-ending knee injury late in that season, keeping him out all of the 2012 campaign. Josey joins fellow junior teammate Kony Ealy, a defensive end, in declaring for the draft.

Funeral services for Beverly JoAnn Bishop of Ballwin, age 69, will be held this morning at 11:30 at the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Wildwood. Visitation will be from 10:30 until service time. Graveside services will be in the St. James Cemetery at 2:30. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

Funeral services for Ann J. Simmons of Rolla, age 59, will be held at 11:00 Wednesday morning at the Rolla Chapel on James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Ridgeview Christian Church.

Funeral services for Lena Mae Wells of Salem, age 85, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Miner Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Ohlman Missionary Baptist Church.

Private graveside services for Gertrude La Verne McAllister of Salem, age 87, will be held at a later date at the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
