Extremely cold weather and slippery driving conditions have cancelled school for Oak Hill R-1, Green Forest R-2, Dent-Phelps R-3, Bunker R-3, Northwood R-4 and Salem R-80 as well as GED classes for today. The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a City of Salem warrant and a burglary. On Thursday, January 6th at 4:26 in the morning, an officer was detailed to Poplar Bluff to transport a 20-year old Salem male who was being held on a City of Salem warrant. He was taken into custody and transported to the Dent County Jail where he was incarcerated. On Friday, January 7th at 4:45 in the afternoon, an officer was sent to a residence in the 200 block of South Hickory in reference to a burglary. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown forcibly entered an outbuilding and took items valued $98. Anyone with any information regarding the burglary, which is still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their January meeting Tuesday evening at the fire station. After approval of the agenda and a review of the minutes from the previous meeting with no changes, the 2011 budget was reviewed and approved, the bills were reviewed and checks were signed, and the 2011 truck payment was reviewed and approved for payment in January. The Board then reviewed the calendar with approval, election dates were noted and the Board then reviewed the reimbursement report. In old business, it was reported that the station inventory is still in progress with Chief Nash acquiring prices, the roof repair has been completed and it was noted that the show room area would need to be addressed, and the annual audit has been scheduled tentatively for May. Chief Brad Nash then reported there has been no word on the FEMA radio grant and the vehicle grant has been declined. The Board then set their February meeting for Thursday, February 24th, due to schedule conflicts. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a traffic violation, stealing, property damage, and a disturbance. On Monday, January 3rd at 5:25 PM, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 21-year old female of Raymondville for driving while having her license suspended. She was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Tuesday, January 4th at 10:50 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the Salem Upper Elementary in reference to stealing. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 29-year old female of Salem for keeping fundraiser funds. She was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. Later that afternoon at 1:08, an officer was dispatched to the Salem City Park in reference to property damage to the outhouse located near the pavilion on the north side of the park. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown damaged the door, toilet, and urinal. The value of the damage is approximately $750. Later on that afternoon at 2:43, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to property damage. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown damaged the paint on a gold 2002 Chevrolet truck that was parked in the 300 block of East Bryan. The value of the damage is approximately $350. At 8:12 Wednesday night, January 5th, an officer was detailed to the Salem Bowling Center in reference to a disturbance. The investigation of the report led to the detention of a 16-year old male of Jadwin for 3rd degree assault on a law enforcement officer. He was released to his mother and the report will be forwarded to the juvenile officer for further review. The Salem Tigers Boys Basketball game with Sullivan scheduled for Tuesday night was postponed and no makeup date has been announced. The makeup date for the Potosi game cancelled in December is February 3rd at the Salem High School Gym.

The Missouri State Fast-Pitch Softball Coaches’ Association released their award that honors students with outstanding academic success in the classroom while participating in a sport for their school. Salem had four girls with a perfect 4.0 GPA that earned Academic All-State 1st Team and they were Samantha Parker, Leah Whelan, Darian Grogan and Mackenzie Wulff. Three Salem girls earned Academic All-State 2nd Team and they were Katy Vaughn, Kaytlyn Wells and Cortney Putman. This is Samantha Parker and Leah Whelan’s second year in a row to be on the 1st team, and Kaytlyn Wells second year in a row on the 2nd team. As a team, the Salem Lady Softball Tigers had a 3.7 GPA that earned them Academic All-State Team honors and for the 3rd year in a row, earned through the Missouri State High School Athletic Association the Outstanding Scholastic Team Award. Congratulations ladies!!!

The Missouri Tigers will host the Nebraska Cornhuskers tonight in Big 12 play starting at 5:30. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio. Missouri is 12-2 on the year and 0-1 in the Big 12.

The St. Louis Blues will be in Anaheim to face the Ducks tonight starting at 9:00 after Missouri basketball on KSMO Radio.

The City of Salem Winter Youth Basketball Program is just around the corner. The Winter Youth Basketball Program is for boys and girls currently enrolled in the 1st through 6th grades. Sign-ups will be held at the Salem Freedom Activity Center located at 1201 West Rolla Road in the Foyer Thursday and Friday, January 13th and 14th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. The cost is $15 per child. Funeral services for Lowell Pogue of Salem, age 86, will be held Thursday morning at 10:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Bay Cemetery near Bunker.

Funeral services for Cordell “Corky” Callahan of St. James, age 90, will be held Thursday at 7:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 4:00 until service time. Interment will be Friday at 11:00 at the Freeman Cemetery in Cherryville with Full Military Honors.

Funeral services for Susie Bailey of Salem, age 69, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the Pleasant Union Methodist Church in Reynolds County. Visitation will be held Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Polk Cemetery in Reynolds County.
