The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was held Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated that the workers would be cleaning off the bus routes and removing snow from some roads. They would also be grading some of the hills for better traction. Purcell said that workers would also be repairing the front pump on the brush cutter. In District 2, Commissioner Gary Larson said that sand would be spread out on Dent County Roads 2120, 4430, 5280, 5290 and 5340. He went on to say that the grader blade was going to be changed out on grader #28, and maintenance work was going to be done on graders 25 and 27. He reported that the rabies alert for Dent County has been lifted as of December 21^st, but rabies is still a problem in the area. The alert was lifted as the level of rabies found in the animals tested has decreased. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he would be meeting with Dent County Emergency Management Director Brad Nash today to do a conference call with SEMA to see if there may be some money available to upgrade the emergency management operation centers. He said that the commissioners would continue to work on the budget as well. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that propane bids were taken by phone for the courthouse and Ferrellgas had the low price of $1.95 a gallon and that was approved by the commission. She is also preparing work budgets for the commissioners. At 10:00, Mayor Gary Brown from the City of Salem came by to discuss with the county a bill for the jailing of city arrest victims. The outstanding bill is for $28,477. Dent County Prosecutor Brandi Baird stated that the agreement between the city and county from 1998 allowed the county to bill the city $35 per day for prisoners, and in 2005 that was raised to $40 per day. There have been disputes about the charges as in the past the charges were done on day by day basis, that is if a prisoner was arrested at 11:50 at night and incarcerated, the city would be billed the ten minutes remaining in that day as a whole day, and would then be billed the next day as a whole day as well. Since Sheriff Rick Stallings has taken office, there has been a “gentleman’s agreement” that a day would now be 24 hours from the time of arrest. Baird said that agreement needs to be in writing between the city and county. The mayor asked for some relief from the bill and the sheriff’s department is going to review the charges and present their findings at a future meeting. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department was doing a well being check on a resident in Salem and contacted the Dent County Coroner’s office. Dent County Coroner Gina White pronounced 23-year old Billy Joel Richmond of Salem dead at 12:13 Monday morning. No autopsy was performed as a toxicology was sent to the AIT Laboratory. The conclusion as to the reason for the death was suicide.
