The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct a Special Meeting at the district administrative offices boardroom today beginning at 5:15 pm. After approval of the agenda, the Board will address resignations. The meeting will then adjourn and go into Executive Session. The Special Meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.  

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving theft, forgery and an assault. On January 5th at 7:50 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a Nintendo game player and a game valued $160.00 from a residence in the 900 block of East Fourth Street. On January 6th at 11:43 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to forgery. The report revealed a 31-year old Salem female forged three checks totaling $650.00. On January 6th at 11:39 in the evening, an officer was detailed to the 1800 block of South Oak in reference to an assault. The report revealed that a 21-year old Salem female had assaulted a 46-year old Salem female. Further investigation of the report led to the arrest of the woman who was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Anyone with any information regarding the theft, which is still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will perform edge rut repair on Route 32 in Texas County, from the intersection of Route 17 to the Dent County line beginning Tuesday, January 13th.  Weather permitting, crews and equipment will be on the roadway between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Edge rut repair work requires placing material at the edge of the roadway and is necessary to reduce shoulder drop off. While performing this function, crews and equipment are located directly on or near the roadway. Motorists are urged to exercise caution when moving through the work zone. Johnna M. Elliott was sentenced to 30 months in prison for distributing crack cocaine according to US Attorney Catherine L. Hanaway. The 29-year old Elliott of Rolla pled guilty in October to one felony count of distribution of crack cocaine and one felony count of possession with intent to distribute in excess of five grams of crack cocaine in November and December 2006 in Phelps County. She appeared Thursday for sentencing before United States District Judge E. Richard Webber. Hanaway commended the work on the case by the Rolla Police Department, the Phelps County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol Crime Laboratory Division; and Assistant US Attorney Ray Meyer.

The University of Missouri Extension’s Salem TCRC will host a hands-on workshop titled “QuickBooks Pro for the Small Business”.  This workshop will be held on Friday, January 23rd from 9:30 am to 4:00 p.m. This training will be taught by University of Missouri Business Development Specialist, Mick Gilliam. You will learn how to set up accounts; enter transactions; invoicing; payroll; tracking customers and vendors; and generating financial reports. Each participant will have a computer workstation for hands on instruction in the Salem TCRC Computer Lab. Class size is limited to 10 students.  The Salem TCRC is located in the Salem Freedom Activity Center at 1200 W. The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers played smothering defense and took advantage of 23 St. Clair turnovers to beat the Bulldogs on their home floor, 63-25. Salem led at the half by the score of 36-6 and cruised to their 5th win of the year to go against seven losses. Salem was led in scoring by C.J. Smith and Phillip Moser who each tallied 16 points. Zach Pitchford added 10 more points as Salem will host Sullivan Tuesday night at the SHS Gym.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will host Cabool tonight at the SHS Gym starting at 6:00 with the JV game followed by the varsity contest at about 7:15. You can hear the varsity game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com. Salem enters the game with a 4-8 record overall and 0-1 in the SCA.

Ade Dagunduro led all scorers with 20 points, as the Nebraska Cornhuskers opened their Big 12 schedule with a 56-51 win over the Missouri Tigers at the Devaney Center. Leo Lyons scored a team-high 12 points for the Tigers (13-3, 0-1), who rallied back from an 18-point deficit and nearly pulled off a fifth straight win. Missouri will play Colorado Wednesday night at 8:00.

Missouri Tigers sophomore All-American wide receiver Jeremy Maclin announced on Friday that he will enter the 2009 NFL Draft. The two-time All-American led the nation in all-purpose yardage as a sophomore. His 2,833 all-purpose yards were the fifth-most in NCAA history. Maclin scored 17 touchdowns -- 13 receiving, two rushing, one kickoff return and one on a punt return. He also caught 102 passes for 1,260 yards for Missouri this season, helping the Tigers to their second consecutive appearance in the Big 12 championship game. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Maclin also returned 23 punts for an average of 11.7 yards and averaged 24 yards on 42 kickoff returns.

The St. Louis Blues dropped a 2-1 decision last night to Edmonton to end their two-game winning streak. Yan Statsny was the lone goal scorer for the Blues who will be in Calgary tomorrow night.

Funeral services for Mary E. Hodges of Salem, age 66, will be held at 11:00 today at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

Funeral services for Donna Faye Allen of Salem, age 70, will be held today at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem.

Memorial services for Wilma M. Manahan of Salem, age 82, will be held tonight from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Salem Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for Orin Wesley Lough of Salem, age 92, will be held Tuesday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held from 10:00 until 11:00 Tuesday morning. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery.

Funeral services for James F. Murray of Salem, age 84, are incomplete at this time but are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.
