The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. Commissioner Gary Larson was not in attendance due to a death in his family. At the meeting, James Fulton brought in a petition with 14 signatures that was requested by the commission agreeing with him that Dent County Road 2230 be changed from a county maintained road to a private drive. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that when Commissioner Larson returns Monday, the commission would discuss the petition and determine when to set a public hearing on the matter. The final determination of whether the road remains a county maintained road or becomes a private drive belongs to the Dent County Commissioners after the public hearing. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that workers will be patching a number of chip and seal roads and ditch work will be done on Dent County Road 6070. He also said that shop maintenance would be done. Supervisor Sam Gorman gave the District 2 road report and he stated that brush was going to be cut on Dent County Roads 2370 and 3050, and another man would be screening brown rock. Gorman indicated that he and Commissioner Larson had checked the emergency generator at the Oak Grove Baptist Church this week to make sure it was working properly. Gorman stated that shop maintenance was also going to be done. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles told Supervisor Gorman that he received a compliment from residents that lived on Dent County Road 2090 about the brush cutting done by the workers in District 2. Skiles indicated that he attended the Public Housing Authority Board meeting, MRPC External Relations meeting and regular meeting of the MRPC commissioners Thursday. He said that the new appointed members to the commission were introduced and that included Bryon Craig from Dent County. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that work continues on the 2013 county budget and that a preliminary budget will be ready on January 15th. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams reported that sales tax revenues for General Revenue received this month came in at $60,497.15 and that is $7,718 more than January of 2012. At the last meeting, Deputy Wayne Becker and Sheriff Rick Stallings came in to discuss budget requests for LEST, the Sheriff’s Revolving Fund, the Sheriff Training Fund, the Inmate security Fund, the DSSS Funds and the Restitution Fund. Assessor Brenda Bell and newly elected Assessor Tina Whitaker came in to discuss their budget requests. The next meeting of the Commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and it is open to the public.
The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct a Special Meeting, called by Mayor, Gary Brown, at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington on Monday, January 14th beginning at 6:15 pm. The Special Meeting will be to consider current and proposed City of Salem projects. The Special Meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.
This is the worst flu season in ten years, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and it seems to be getting worse by the day. The flu season is from November until March and we haven’t hit the peak yet. Dent County reports 38 confirmed cases of flu. This number only reflects those who have sought medical help and been tested. The best protection from the flu is the flu shot. Don’t wait to get your flu shot. Dent County Health Center has ordered more vaccine to cover the local need and gives flu shots on a walk-in basis. The cost is $25 or bring your Medicare card. Volunteers for AARP will be conducting free tax filing assistance in the Salem TCRC computer lab this year. This free tax filing assistance will begin on Friday, February 1st and continue every Friday until April 12th. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers are trained in filing certain tax forms and schedules, including the Form 1040. However, the Volunteer Protection Act requires that our volunteers stay in the scope of the program. If counselors feel they do not have adequate knowledge or your return is too complex, you may need to seek another qualified counselor or paid tax assistance. Items you need to bring to have your tax returns prepared include: Proof of identification – Picture ID; Social Security Cards for you, your spouse and dependents or a Social Security Number verification letter issued by the Social Security Administration; Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents on the tax return; Wage and earning statement(s) Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, 1099-from all employers; Year end Social Security Statements showing total SS received and Medicare payments; Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099); A copy of last year’s federal and state returns if available; Proof of bank account routing numbers and account numbers for Direct Deposit, such as a blank check and to file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms. Appointments may be made by calling the Salem TCRC at 729-8163. The Salem TCRC is located in the Salem Community Center at 1200 West Rolla Road. Kylee Elmore's basket at the end of the 3rd quarter broke a 30-30 tie and propelled the Houston Tigers to 45-37 win over the Salem Tigers in SCA play Thursday night at the SHS gym. Salem was led in scoring by Kristen Hemken with 12 points as the Lady Tigers fall to 7-8 on the year and 1-2 in the SCA. The Lady Tigers will be off until next Friday when they will host the Licking Lady Wildcats at the SHS gym.
The Salem Tiger Boys basketball team will host Mountain Grove tonight in SCA play. The JV will start at 6:00 with the varsity to follow. Salem is 4-7 on the year and you can hear the varsity contest on KSMO, online at ksmoradio.com, and can be seen on fidelitylocal6.com.
The City of Salem Youth Winter Basketball Program FINAL signups will be held today from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory at 1200 West Rolla Road and Saturday, January 12th from 9:00 am to 12:00 (noon). The Youth Winter Basketball Program is for all boys and girls that are currently in the 1st through 6th grades. The cost is $20 per child and for more information, call Greg Nash at the Parks & Recreational Department at 729-6290. Volunteers to coach are needed for the Youth Winter Basketball Program and are asked to attend these signups.
The 10th ranked Missouri Tigers will be on the road Saturday night to play the Ole Miss Rebels in an SEC contest. Missouri is 12-2 on the year. You can hear the game on KSMO, starting with the pre-game show at 6:30.
