The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was held Monday at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5490 and that workers would be repairing and replacing downed signs. He said that rock was going to be hauled to the shop and that two workers will be working at re-organizing the new additions to the Road and Bridge Department Building. In District Two, Commissioner Gary Larson reported that two men would be hauling rock and that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 2110. He reported that other workers would be repairing or replacing downed signs as well as getting the equipment ready for snow and cold weather by adding fuel additive for the extremely cold nights ahead. Larson went on to say that two of his crew would also be helping out at the maintenance shed. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that the General Revenue Fund finished in the black for 2010 by over $104,000 due to savings by office holders and unanticipated revenues, and that the Road and Bridge Department Budget also finished in the black by over $140,000 basically due to unanticipated revenues from FEMA for road repairs. Skiles did say that the sales tax revenue just received for the month was down $9,000 from the amount received last year for the same time period. Donald Dodd came in representing the IDA to discuss payment on the federal audit for the year 2007. The audit was necessary because an IDA grant put the county over the $500,000 threshold that triggers a federal audit. Dodd discussed sharing the cost with the county, but believes the bill is too high as did Presiding Commissioner Skiles. The county has been waiting on the final bill from the accounting firm after receiving their first bill of $13,000. Skiles said that he would like to have a representative from the accounting firm address both the IDA and Commissioners to explain their bill and will ask them for that meeting once they call concerning a release sent to the commission that Skiles refuses to sign. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley open bids for grader blades for the county and they ranged from a low bid of $16,790 to $20,000, but the bid was not awarded until the commission finds out if the price includes delivery. At the last meeting, Montauk Park Ranger Kevin Reed and Doug Rusk, the new Superintendent at Montauk State Park, stopped by to visit. The Dent County Commissioners will meet Thursday morning at the courthouse and it is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a probation violation, tampering with a motor vehicle, an active warrant, trespassing, and burglary. On Friday, December 31^st at 1:37 p.m. an officer apprehended a 28-year old male of Salem in lieu of a felony probation violation absconder warrant near the intersection of Hunt and Oak Streets. He was incarcerated on the warrant at the Dent County Jail pending extradition. Later that night at 11:31, an officer was detailed to the Wal-Mart parking lot in reference to tampering with a motor vehicle. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown tampered with the engine of a blue 1990 Chevrolet van and took a coil wire off the vehicle while parked in the parking lot. On Saturday, January 1^st at 3:08 pm, an officer made contact with a 37-year old male of Salem at the Mobil Convenience Store who had an active warrant from the City of Salem. He was taken into custody on the warrant, pled guilty, paid fines, and was released. On Sunday, January 2^nd at 2:05 PM, an officer was sent to Wal-Mart in reference to trespassing. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 67-year old male of Bunker for trespassing after having receiving a no-trespass order. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later that night at 9:08 p.m. an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 500 block of North Hickory in reference to a burglary. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown entered a residence through a window and took two checkbooks, a jar of change, and a snub nose 38-caliber handgun. There will be a CBCO Blood Drive in Salem today from 1:00 to 6:00 at the First Baptist Church. To give blood, you must weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health and bring an ID.
