The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 415, 416, 418, 554, 555 and 667. Simpson also said that grading would be done and materials would be hauled to Dent County Roads 408 and 551. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 221 and 406 and on various roads in the Sligo and Shortbend area. Tune also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 215. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended a Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee meeting. At that meeting, 17 grant requests were reviewed for the Region I area with two requests coming from Dent County: one for the Sheriffs Department for an automatic generator and the other from Oak Hill R-1 School for a mass shelter structure. Skiles said seven of the requests were awarded and that did include the Sheriff’s Department request. They will receive their grant of $10,000 towards the end of February. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to remind everyone that the last day to request a mail-out ballot for the February Primary election is January 30
th and the last day to absentee vote is February 4
th. At the meeting Commissioner Simpson made the motion to put on the November General Election Ballot the initiative that would make the office of prosecuting attorney a full time position, Commissioner Tune seconded the motion and all agreed. Commissioners Skiles and Simpson also reported that they both attended the MODOT meeting that was held Tuesday to review the preliminary plans of improving Highway 32 West between Dent County Roads 608 and 240A. The next meeting of the Commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
The Salem Police Department released their reports involving theft. On December 21st at 6:17 in the evening, an office was detailed to Country Mart in reference to the theft of a cell phone. The report revealed that person(s) unknown took a cell phone that was left sitting on the counter valued at $150. On December 27th at 7:50 in the evening, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The report revealed that person(s) unknown took a snowman yard ornament valued at $50 from a residence in the 700 block of West International. On December 28th at 1:57 in the afternoon, an officer was sent to the BP Convenience Store in reference to the theft of fuel. The report revealed that person(s) unknown pumped $57 in fuel and left in a black Chevrolet short bed truck. At 4:26 the same afternoon, an officer was detailed back to the BP Convenience Store in reference to the theft of fuel. The report revealed that person(s) unknown pumped $10.16 in fuel and left in a gold GMC Jimmy. On December 29th at 5:25 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to the 1400 block of West Franklin in reference to a theft. The report revealed that a 14-year old male juvenile took prescription pills from a residence. Anyone with any information regarding these incidents, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.
University of Missouri Extension will be starting a new program in 2008 entitled “Grow Your Farm”. This program is geared towards both newcomers to agriculture as well as folks who may be long-time producers but who are interested in adding a new venture to their existing operation. This course consists of 8 sessions as well as at least two farm tours and is taught by not only Extension specialists but also farmer presenters who have been successful at their various enterprises and are willing to share their thoughts and recommendations to program participants. Participants will receive instruction and training on a number of topics including Walking the Farm and Assessing Opportunities, Developing a Business Plan for Your Farm, Farm Finances and Record Keeping, and more. This program is basically designed to help producers identify profitable agriculture enterprises for their acreage and realize the feasibility and limitations of their potential enterprise and develop a formal business plan for implementation of their enterprise. This program will be held in Rolla at 200 N. Main beginning January 21st and continuing until mid-May, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The cost is $300 for all eleven sessions. The Thayer Lady Bobcats scored 22 points off Salem Lady Tiger turnovers helping them defeat Salem, 47-41. The Tigers were led by Allison Jones with 15 points followed by Natalie Howard with 13 points. Salem falls to 11-3 on the year and 2-1 in the SCA. They will be at Owensville Tuesday night.
The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers start their SCA schedule tonight as they travel to Cabool to face the Bulldogs. The boys are 9-5 on the year. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio or online at www.ksmoradio.com starting at 7:15.
The Missouri Basketball Tigers start their Big 12 conference games tomorrow when they host Texas starting at 12:00. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio. Missouri is 10-5 on the year.
Brad Boyes netted two goals and Manny Legace made 25 stops to lead St. Louis over Dallas, 4-2, at Scottrade Center. Legace learned earlier Thursday that he was selected to his first NHL All-Star competition, and became the seventh goaltender in Blues history to be so honored. Paul Kariya added a goal and two assists and Keith Tkachuk also scored for the Blues, who have won four of five and have outscored the opposition 11-3 in their last three games. The Blues are 18-4-0 when allowing two goals or less this season. They will travel to Columbus tonight starting at 6:00 on KSMO Radio.
In a game that will be remembered for Saint Louis recording the fewest points in modern Division I history, the George Washington Colonials upended the Billikens 49-20 in Atlantic-10 play at the Charles E. Smith Center.
