An accident occurred early Friday morning at an unknown time in Crawford County on Highway 19 at Highway 8 in Steelville that took the life of a Steelville man. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Dodge pickup driven by 32-year old Paul Young traveled off the right side of the roadway, went down an embankment, and crossed over Highway 8. The Dodge then traveled down an embankment on the south side of Highway 8 and struck a tree. Young was pronounced dead at the scene by Crawford County Coroner Paul Hutson at 8:16 in the morning and taken to the Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Dodge pickup was totaled in the accident and was removed from the scene by Miles and Sons Towing of Steelville.

An accident occurred at 11:56 Friday morning in Dent County on Route C in Anutt. According to the highway patrol report, a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by 21 year-old Jamie Dodson of Lake Spring, attempted to avoid an animal in the roadway, and ran off the right side of the road. Dodson then overcorrected, ran off the left side of the roadway, struck an embankment, and went through a fence. Dodson suffered minor injuries and sought her own treatment. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Pontiac Grand Prix sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Lewis Garage of Rolla.

An accident occurred at 8:00 Friday night in Dent County on Highway 68 about five miles west of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1997 Nissan Pathfinder driven by 41-year-old Bonnie Brooks of Salem was traveling east on Highway 68. The accident occurred as Brooks lost control of the vehicle on the ice-covered roadway, traveled off the left side of the roadway, struck an embankment causing the vehicle to overturn. Brooks suffered minor injuries and was transported to Salem Memorial Hospital by Salem Ambulance. Brooks was wearing a safety restraint at the time of the accident. The Nissan sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitakers Towing in Salem.

An accident occurred at 5:40 Thursday evening in Phelps County at the intersection of County Roads 3110 and 3040. According to the highway patrol report, a 2003 Chevrolet driven by 27- year old Casey Miller of Rolla slid across the center line, traveled off the left side of the roadway, and struck a tree on the passengers side. Miller suffered serious injuries and was flown by Lifeline to the University Hospital in Columbia. She was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. Miller was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while under the influence of drugs, careless and imprudent driving, and not wearing a seat belt. The Chevrolet was totaled in the accident and was removed from the scene by C and C Towing.

There will be a CBCO Blood Drive in Salem tomorrow from 1:00 to 6:00 at the First Baptist Church. To give blood, you must weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health and bring an ID.

The Salem Varsity Boys Basketball Tigers jumped out to a 15-4 lead in the 1st quarter, but could not hold as the St. Clair Bulldogs rallied to beat the Tigers, 42-41. Salem was led in scoring by Jacob Kettner with 13 points followed by Jonathan Hambacker with 12. Salem will host Sullivan tomorrow night starting at 6:00 with the JV contest.

The Salem JV won at St. Clair Friday night by the score of 33-31.

The Salem 9th grade Tigers beat Rolla Saturday by the score of 37-29 with Adam Ziske leading the way for Salem with eight points. The Freshman Tigers will host West Plains today at 5:30 at the Upper Elementary School Gym.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will host the Houston Lady Tigers in SCA play tonight starting at 6:00 with the varsity game being held first contest followed by the junior varsity game. You can hear the varsity game on KSMO and online at ksmoradio.com. Salem enters the game with a 4-8 record and 0-1 in the SCA.

Alec Burks scored a career-high 36 points as Colorado took down No. 9 Missouri, 89-76, in the Big 12 conference opener for both schools at Coors Events Center. Michael Dixon led the Tigers (14-2, 0-1) with 17 points. Laurence Bowers added 15 points to go along with seven rebounds and Marcus Denmon scored 14 for Missouri, who will play Nebraska Wednesday at 5:30 on KSMO Radio..

Martin Biron turned aside 24 shots to help the New York Rangers take a 2-1 win over the St. Louis Blues at Scottrade Center. Brad Winchester had the lone goal and Jaroslav Halak allowed two goals on 24 shots for the Blues, who have dropped their past three games. The Blues will host the Phoenix Coyotes tonight starting at 8:00 and KSMO will join the game in progress after Lady Tiger Basketball.

Joe Flacco passed for 265 yards and two touchdowns and the Baltimore Ravens scored 27 unanswered points Sunday for a 30-7 victory over Kansas City in their AFC Wild Card game. Matt Cassel was just 9-of-18 for 70 yards and three interceptions for a Chiefs team that had trouble getting out of its own way. The AFC West champions scored their only points on Jamaal Charles' 41-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

Funeral services for Faye McDonald of Salem, age 69, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Salem Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Jadwin Cemetery.

Visitation for Paul L. Bell of Steelville, age 84, will be today from 2:00 to 8:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Private family funeral services will be held at a later date. Interment will be in the Asher Cemetery in St. James. Memorials may be given to the Steelville Ministerial Alliance or Community Child Care Center.

Funeral services for Lowell Pogue of Salem, age 86, will be held Thursday morning at 10:00 at the Dent County Memeorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Wednesday night. Interment will be in the Bay Cemetery in Bunker. Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Association.

Memorial services for Janice Garn of Lecoma, age 81, will be held Tuesday at 11:00 at the Anutt Community Church. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.

Funeral services for Susan Bailey of Salem, age 69, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the Pleasant Union Methodist Church in Reynolds County. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Thursday night at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Polk Cemetery in Reynolds County.

Memorials services for Francis “Mike“ Scherer of Salem, formerly of Illinois, age 69, will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Salem Public Library or the American Cancer Society.
