United States Attorney Catherine L. Hanaway of St. Louis released the names of the Dent County residents that have been indicted on federal conspiracy drug charges. Those indicted were all from Salem except one and included 39-year old David O. Gray, Jr., 32-year old Shane Robertson, 37-year old Jared Wood, 44-year old Mark A. Brisco, 38-year old Wade Mendenhall, 42-year old Tommy Turner, 41-year old Thomas M. Wind, 43-year old Shane Canaday and 34-year old Travis J. Russell. Also indicted was 55-year old Michael L. Curley of Boss. The indictment states that between November 2003 and December 2007,these people participated in conspiring to manufacture, transport, use and sell methamphetamine in the Dent County area. According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, all ten were indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of conspiracy to possess pseudoephedrine knowing that it would be used to manufacture methamphetamine. If convicted, these charges carry penalty ranges of 20 years or more in prison and/or fines up to $2 million. Hanaway commended the investigative work on the case by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, South Central Drug Task Force, Dent County Sheriff's Department, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Marshal's Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Drug Enforcement Tactical Diversion Team, the Dent County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, and Assistant United States Attorney Noelle Collins, who is handling the case for the U.S. Attorney's Office. The charges set forth in an indictment are merely accusations, and each defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
New board members were elected Wednesday to the Salem Chamber of Commerce Board at the Salem TCRC during the regular January membership meeting. They include Mike Farrar with US Bank, Phillip Giocomelli with Wilson Mortuary and Donna Lynn Gray with American First Mortgage.
An accident happened in Dent County Wednesday morning at 7:49 on Highway 19 South about ten miles from Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 Mitsubishi box truck was traveling northbound on Highway 19 driven by 43-year old Dale Hollingsworth of Jefferson City, when the box truck traveled off the right side of the roadway. Hollingsworth overcorrected causing the truck to travel back across the roadway where it went off the left side of the roadway striking a fence and hitting several trees before coming to rest. Hollingsworth suffered serious injuries and was flown to the University Hospital in Columbia by St. Johns Air Ambulance. Hollingsworth was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident and the truck was totaled. The truck was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.
January 22nd is the last day to file for a seat on the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors, the Dent County Fire Protection District Board, for a seat on the local school boards as well as for the East Ward or West Ward Aldermanic positions in the City of Salem or even for the position of Mayor in the City of Salem. The municipal election will be held on April 8th. Incumbent Judy Thompson has filed for a seat on the board at the Salem Memorial District Hospital, which has one seat open. The Dent County Fire Protection District has one 6-year term available. Incumbent Stanley McElfresh has signed up and is being opposed by Matthew Pappert. The fire district also has one 5-year term available and currently Grant Hamlet is running unopposed for the position and one 4-year term where incumbent Elizabeth Greundel is currently running unopposed. The Oak Hill R-I has two openings and Joel Devall has been the only filing. At Green Forest R-2, incumbents Amber Toman, Rick Shults, and Scott Shults have filed for a seat on that board along with Troy Ard. At Dent-Phelps R-3, incumbents Darrell Skiles and Toby Toman have filed for the board which has three 3-years terms and one 2-year term opening. At Northwood R-4, incumbents John Harrison and Tracie Inman along with Laura Parsons have filed for the board that has three 3-year terms. Filing for the Salem R-80 school board thus far are incumbents Greg Stevens and Jimmy Williams along with Jack Blackwell and Joseph Howard. The board has three 3-year terms available. For the City of Salem, incumbent Mike Whitley has filed for the west-ward aldermanic position and is being opposed by Kenneth Nash, incumbent Jim McDaniels has filed for the east-ward aldermanic position, and incumbent Gary Brown has filed for mayoral position of Salem and is being opposed by Rodney Peterson. There is a $25 filing fee when filing for a city of Salem position.
The City of Salem will conduct a “Recycle Day” on Saturday, January 19th from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at the corner of Third and Grand Streets in Salem. They will accept aluminum cans, plastic and glass items. For more information regarding the City of Salem “Recycle Day” call 729-4811.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will try to improve their SCA record to 3-0 tonight as they will host the Thayer Lady Bobcats starting with the JC contest at 6;00 followed by the varsity game at about 7:20. The St. Louis Blues will be back in action tonight against the Dallas Stars starting at 7:30. The Blues have won three of their last four games. You can hear that game joined in progress after Salem Tiger Basketball.
Manny Legace was named the NHL Player of the Week last week as he recorded two shutouts during the week and now has three on the season. Legace is the first Blues player this year to be honored as Player of the Week.

Funeral services for John E. Wisdom of St. James, age 83, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in St. James. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. There will be a Military Honor Guard service.
Funeral services for Myrtle Berry of Salem, age 88, will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:00 at Wilson Mortuary. Visitation will be held tonight from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Upper Parker Community Church and the Green Forest Cemetery.
Funeral services for Teresa (Decker) French of Salem, age 51, will be held January 16th at Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be January 15th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date for Earl Stanley Johnson of Salem, age 53. All the arrangements are under the direction of Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
