The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday morning for their regular meeting in the Dent County Courthouse. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams was in to report December’s sales tax receipts of $66,353.50. That was $3,679.77 higher than the receipts for the same time period a year ago. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that general maintenance was being done on trucks #56 and #66, and that brush was being cut on Dent County Road 5600, commonly referred to as the Turtle Loop. He went on to say that he had a crew out picking up old tires. Purcell reminded citizens that it is illegal to dump anything on county roadways and right of ways and violators will be prosecuted. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated that his crews were conducting general maintenance at the Road and Bridge Department, cleaning up a trash pile, and checking for road signs needing to be replaced. Both Purcell and Larson noted that the roadways are frozen to where no grading can be done and that the very low temperatures also limits what equipment will even operate. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said Thursday afternoon he would be attending Public Housing Authority Board meeting at MRPC Headquarters in St. James, then an External Relations Committee meeting in the evening, and finally a MRPC Board meeting that night. Skiles noted that the MRPC Board would be visiting with federal legislative representatives. He went on to say that he had visited with Farm and Home Publishing about corrections to the proof copies of the new plat book. The company has indicated that the new books should be available in a few weeks.  Skiles also shared that he had previously contacted Congressman Jason Smith’s office about the short comment period on the Ozarks National Scenic Riverways’ General Management Plan. Eric Harman of Congressman Smith’s office, has contacted Skiles and said that on Wednesday Congressman Smith and Senator Roy Blunt sent a letter to Patty Trap, the Acting Regional Director of the National Park Service, requesting a 90-day extension of the comment period. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said her office was continuing to work on the budget for 2015. The next regular meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 in the Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

An accident happened Wednesday night at 7:33 in Phelps County on Highway 72 about six miles east of Rolla. According to the highway patrol report, a 2007 Pontiac Vibe driven by 33-year old Jeremy Tune of Loose Creek was traveling eastbound on Highway 72 and struck 30-year old Joseph Thompson of Belle walking eastbound in the roadway with the front of the Pontiac. Thompson suffered serious injuries and was transported by the Phelps County ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. The Pontiac Vibe sustained moderate damage and was removed by C&C Towing.
