The Salem Area Community Betterment Association (SACBA) will hold its annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner to honor volunteer citizens and organizations on Tuesday, February 11^th at The Gathering Place located at the Grace Community Church at 6:30 p.m. Nominations for the Gift of Time awards and the Gift of Time Honor Roll are currently being sought. The categories for volunteer recognition include Education, Community Enhancement, Arts and Culture, Youth (be it an adult or adult organization), Youth (be it a youth or youth organization), Humanitarianism, and Historic Preservation.  Any citizen may nominate any individual and/or any organization that has made a significant volunteer contribution to the community during the calendar year 2013. An anonymous panel of citizens will select the Gift of Time awardees. The Gift of Time awards will be presented and all nominees will be honored at the Volunteer Recognition Dinner. Nomination forms are now available at the Salem TCRC, the Salem Public Library, the Salem News and the SACBA office at 200 N. Main. You can mail in your nomination to SACBA, P.O. Hunters checked 11,967 deer during the alternative-methods portion of Missouri’s firearms deer season December 21^st - 31^st. That figure is 20 percent fewer than in 2012. Top counties for the alternative-methods portion were Oregon with 437 deer checked, Howell with 360, and Shannon with 298. The alternative methods portion replaced the muzzleloader portion of firearms deer season in 2012. At its meeting earlier this month, the Missouri Conservation Commission also set dates for the 2014 firearms turkey and deer hunting seasons. The firearms turkey season dates are: youth season  April 12^th and 13^th, 2014; regular spring season from April 21^st-May 11^th, 2014; and fall firearms season from October 1^st-31^st, 2014. Firearms deer season dates are: urban zones portion from October 10^th-13^th, 2014; early youth portion on November 1^st and 2^nd, 2014; standard firearm portion from November 15^th-25^th, 2014; antlerless portion from November 26^th-December 7^th, 2014; alternative methods portion from December 20^th-30^th, 2014; and the late youth portion on January 3^rd and 4^th, 2015.

The Salem Police Department has released more of their reports. On Sunday, December 29^th at 12:56 in the early morning, an officer was conducting a narcotics investigation at a room at the Walnut Motel. The investigation led to the arrest of a 26-year old Salem male and a 19-year old Eminence female for possession of a methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and distribution of a controlled substance. They were incarcerated pending the application for warrants. A little later that morning at 1:56, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 1500 block of Beezley in reference to a domestic disturbance. The investigation revealed that a 20-year old Salem male had assaulted a 46-year old Salem female. He was arrested for domestic assault, resisting arrest, and assaulting an officer. He was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. That evening at 9:57, an officer made contact with a 34-year old Salem female in the 900 block of East Center who had an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem. She was taken into custody on the warrant and later released with a date to appear in court after posting bond. On Monday, December 30^th at 3:45 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that someone took a Stihl chainsaw, valued $170, from the porch of a residence in the 100 block of South Macarthur. Later that evening at 9:10, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to an assault. That investigation revealed that an unidentified male entered a residence in the 1800 block of South Oak and assaulted a 42-year old Salem female then fled the residence. On Tuesday, December 31^st at 11:57 at night, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of East Hawkins in reference to a disturbance. The investigation revealed that a 21-year old Salem male had assaulted a 21-year old female and created a disturbance outside the residence. He was arrested for assault and peace disturbance, incarcerated, and issued summonses to appear in court. On Wednesday, January 1^st at 12:10 in the early morning, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 200 block of South Hickory in reference to an assault that had already occurred at a residence in the 500 block of East Center. The investigation revealed that a 23-year old Salem male had assaulted a 19-year old Salem female and would not allow her to leave the residence. He was arrested for assault and felonious restraint and then incarcerated pending the application for warrants. Later that morning at 10:13, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of East Hawkins in reference to damage to private property. The investigation revealed that someone damaged a chain link gate, valued at $100.
