An accident happened Monday afternoon in Dent County on Highway 72 about five miles north of Salem that took the lives of three Salem women. According to the highway patrol report, a 2001 Toyota Avalon driven southbound by 46-year old Tammy Davis of Salem, crossed the center line and was struck head-on by a 2000 Peterbuilt Tractor driven by 25-year old Shaun Muncy of Appleton City, Missouri. Two passengers in the Avalon were pronounced dead at the scene and they were 46-year old Jennifer Wisdom and 88-year old Beullah Sellers, both from Salem, and their bodies were taken to the Dent County Coroner’s office. Davis was transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital where she was pronounced dead by Dr. Ekeke. Muncy suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by the Salem Ambulance. All persons involved were wearing seat restraints when the accident occurred. Both vehicles were totaled in the accident. The Missouri State Highway Patrol was assisted at the accident scene by the Dent County Sheriff’s Department and the Dent County Fire Protection District.

The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning.  At the meeting, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done in the East Spring Creek District on Dent County Road 413 and also on various roads in the Sinkin Township and Montauk area.  Simpson said the rest of District 1 would be patching potholes on various chip and seal roads throughout the district.  District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done in the Stone Hill area and also in the Anutt area on Dent County Road 221.  Tune said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 405 and two District 2 crewmembers would be taking a truck and pup trailer to Jefferson City for repairs. Presiding Commissioner Darrel Skiles reported that he would be attending an MRPC meeting Thursday night in St. James.  All three commissioners agreed to hold the annual County Budget Hearing Monday January 22nd at 7:00 pm in Judge Ball’s Courtroom; the meeting will be open to the public and refreshments will be provided.  Final approval of the budget will be Thursday January 25th at 9:00 during the regular meeting of the Commission.  The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

In 2006, the Missouri General Assembly enacted new legislation affecting vehicle operation and Governor Matt Blunt signed the legislation into law. Some of the laws contained an emergency clause and went into effect upon the signing and others went into effect August 28, 2006, however a couple of important laws actually went into effect January 1, 2007. One of those new laws is CLUTCH'S LAW (FAILURE TO YIELD). This law imposes an additional penalty and driver's license suspension on any person failing to yield the right-of-way when the violation results in physical injury, serious physical injury, or death to a person (Section 304.351). This section had an effective date of January 1, 2007. Another change in the law includes changes in the graduated driver’s license program that includes 40 hours of driving experience with at least ten hours of driving after sunset.

Florida's defense put the clamps on Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith, and the Gators ran all over the top-ranked Buckeyes, 41-14, to capture the BCS national title. Other than giving up a touchdown on the game's opening kickoff, Urban Meyer's team suffocated Ohio State, on the way to winning its second national championship. Tim Tebow threw for a touchdown and ran for another score for the Gators (13-1), who set a school record for wins in a season. Florida, which came into the contest ranked second, also got a TD pass from Chris Leak. Florida held the Buckeyes to 82 total yards, including just nine in the second half.

Two-time Most Valuable Player Cal Ripken Jr. and eight-time batting champion Tony Gwynn are likely to gain entry into the Baseball Hall of Fame today. This is the day the voting totals are announced by the Baseball Writers' Association of America, but there is also sure to be controversy surrounding the results. Former home run champion Mark McGwire is also on the ballot for the first time, but he set his big numbers during baseball's steroids era and his reticence to "talk about the past" during Congress' hearings on performance-enhancing drugs in sports left many questions unanswered. Two-time Cy Young Award winner Bret Saberhagen and former MVPs Ken Caminiti and Jose Canseco are also eligible for the first time. Candidates must be named on 75% of ballots cast to gain entry into the Hall.
