The Commons Committee will hold an open house at the Youth Building on Saturday starting at 4:00. All the documents concerning the management of the Commons will be on display. Joanne Maxwell, the Commons Committee and the Fair Board of Directors will be on hand to explain and answer any questions on past policies and their future plans. Your thoughts and suggestions are welcomed as well as needed. There will also be pulled pork sandwiches, chips and soda available. For more information call 247-2606.

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. In the road report, Commissioners Dennis Purcell and Gary Larson both reported that crews would be busy in both districts spreading sand on slick spots and removing snow from the subdivisions with chip and seal roads. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that the county received a response to the letter they sent to Phelps County regarding the cost of the Donald Nash trial. One particular charge the Commission wanted to see taken off the bill was the state sales tax for motel rooms totaling $464.95.  The county is exempt from state sales tax and that amount was removed. Skiles said he would still like to look into the $12,900 that was spent on guard duty and will request information regarding that amount. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of December. During the month, they wrote 33 traffic tickets, 19 warning tickets and two equipment repair orders. They served 52 summons to appear in court and three fugitive warrants. The Salem Police Department investigated 14 accidents, three assaults, three domestic assaults, and four reports of driving while intoxicated. The Department also investigated 18 reports of stealing, six reports of property damage, one burglary, one report of forgery, four reports of disorderly conduct, one report of a lost or stolen plate, and seven reports of leaving the scene of an accident. The Salem Police Department also conducted two death investigations. The police received 1,438 calls for service during the month, handled 113 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 53 calls to the animal control officer. They spent four hours as court bailiff and 16 hours teaching D.A.R.E. The calls in December included 11 calls for escorts, five 9-1-1 calls, two intoxicated driver investigation calls, one call for peace disturbance, 17 ambulance assist calls, two calls for alarms sounding, four calls for fights in progress, two domestic dispute calls, two calls for an intoxicated pedestrian, four fire calls and one wrecker was needed. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 7,959 miles during the month of December and arrested 18 males and 17 females.

Salem’s 150^th birthday is a special event and on Saturday, January 16^th the Salem City Hall will be filled with those ready to celebrate the first event of Salem’s Sesquicentennial. The gathering time is 6:00 PM. Plans for the Costume Ball are moving forward. Enthusiasm is building and individuals are creating their own version of costumes they wish to wear. The Ball will include a costume contest, period scenes and decorations, music through the years, dancing, photographs, a historic video, and light refreshments. Special dances include the Butterfly Waltz, Can Can and the Charleston. You won’t want to miss this event. The Costume Ball is a great way to begin the yearlong celebration. It will start with a social hour including refreshments and photographs.  Scenes designed to depict different historic events or items will be used for backdrops for photos. Charles Pace and Beth Watson will be the photographers. Automated Business Systems will print the photos on site. Photos will be provided at no cost to those attending. Prizes for the best costumes will be awarded for those dressing in fashions from the period 1860-1910: best female costume, best male costume and best child’s costume. You may choose to dress as they did in any period other than current fashion, the 20’s 30’s 40’s etc. However, only individuals that dress in some costume will be admitted to the auditorium. Those who attend but do not wear a costume will be seated in the balcony. The social hour will be followed by music and dancing to selections from the last 150 years.
