The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of December. During the month, they wrote seven equipment repair orders, seven summons to appear in court, 22 warning tickets, and 33 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated seven accidents, three burglaries, one report of child molestation, three reports of domestic violence, one report of driving while drugged, four reports of driving while intoxicated, one report of driving while revoked and/or suspended, and one report of leaving the scene of an accident. The department also investigated five reports of property damage, one report of a recovered stolen vehicle, one report of statutory sodomy, 15 reports of stealing, one report of suicide attempt, one report of trespassing, one report of unlawful possession of a firearm, one report to violate exparte and/or full order of protection and one 96 hour commitment. They also investigated one report of distributing/delivering/manufacturing/producing/possessing a controlled substance, one report of possession of amphetamine, one report of possession of heroin, one report of possession of marijuana and two reports of possession of drug paraphernalia. The Salem Police Department also conducted two sudden death investigations.  The police department received 1,450 calls for service during the month, handled 148 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 74 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 16 hours in court testifying, five hours as court bailiff and spent four hours teaching D.A.R.E. The calls in December included 14 calls for escorts, one call for an intoxicated driver, two calls for prowlers, four calls for a suspicious person and/or vehicle, one intoxicated pedestrian call, seven calls for domestic disputes, six calls for a wrecker. There were seven 911 calls, 13 calls for peace disturbances, 10 calls for alarms sounding, 14 ambulance assist calls, one call for drag racing and/or speeding vehicles, two fire calls and two calls for property damage.  The Salem Police Department drove a total of 8,768 miles and arrested 24 males and two females during the month of December. 

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce January members’ luncheon will be held Tuesday, January 13th at the SBU campus in Salem, Alfermann Gray & Co will host the lunch. A representative from The Department of Veteran Affairs will be at the American Legion on Monday, January 12th at 1:00. Any veteran in Dent County that has outstanding issues with the VA or any issue connected with military service, can come and meet the problem solving Vet Center team. If anyone would like to meet with team they should call the American Legion Post at 729-3710 and have their name listed. 

The Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MRPC), the Phelps County Public Housing Authority (PHA) Family Self-Sufficiency Program and the Missouri Ozarks Community Action (MOCA) will host a free workshop on energy savings on Wednesday, January 14th from 10:00 in the morning until noon at the MRPC offices at #4 Industrial Drive in St. James. The workshop will be presented by MOCA County Project Coordinator Robert Morris. The workshop is offered at no cost and each participant will learn about saving energy, cutting utility bills and other valuable money-saving information. Free training classes are a part of the MRPC and PHA’s efforts to help prepare families who are first-time homebuyers for homeownership and make them aware of the resources available to assist with homeownership. Salem Area Community Betterment Association (SACBA) will hold its annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner to honor volunteer citizens and organizations on Tuesday, February 19th. The dinner will be held at The Gathering Place at the Grace Community Church at 6:30 pm. Tickets may be purchased at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory, the Visitors Center and from SACBA board members. Nominations for the Gift of Time awards and the Gift of Time Honor Roll are sought. The categories for volunteer recognition are: Education, Community Enhancement, Arts and Culture, Youth (an adult or adult organization), Youth (a youth or youth organization), Humanitarianism, and Historic Preservation. Any citizen may nominate any individual and/or any organization that has made a significant volunteer contribution to the community during 2014. An anonymous panel of citizens will select the Gift of Time awardees. The Gift of Time awards will be presented and all nominees will be honored at the Volunteer Recognition Dinner. Nomination forms are available now at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory, the Salem Public Library, Salem News and the Visitors Center. Nominations must be submitted to SACBA (P.O. Box 732, Salem, MO 65560) no later than 5:00 pm. on Friday, January 30th.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will play Newburg in their makeup game tomorrow night starting at 6:00 with the JV game. It will only be two quarters. The varsity game will then be played. The Lady Tigers are 8-3 on the year.

David Backes had four goals and Brian Elliott stopped 23 shots for his second shutout of the season to give the St. Louis Blues a 6-0 win over the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday. Paul Stastny had a goal and an assist while Jaden Schwartz also scored for the Blues, who have won their past two. Elliott now has 27 career shutouts. St. Louis hosts San Jose on Thursday starting at 7:00. KSMO will join the game in progress after Missouri Basketball.

Pitchers Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, John Smoltz and catcher/infielder Craig Biggio were voted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Tuesday. This marks the first time in 60 years that as many as four players were elected and the first time in history that three pitchers were honored in the same election. The Baseball Writers' Association of America last elected four candidates in 1955.

Funeral services for Charles Chipman of Steelville, age 85, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 today. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Steelville Baptist Church Building Fund.

Funeral services for Douglas Mark Dent formerly of Salem will be held Saturday, at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 1:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

A celebration of life for Rosemary Dillon of St. James, age 85, will be held Sunday, January 11th from 1:00 to 4:00 at the St. James Golf and Country Club. Memorials are suggested to the St. James Memorial Public Library. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

Funeral services for Mary Sue Tallant of Rolla, age 71, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the Rolla Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be held Monday from 11:00 in the morning until service time. Interment will be in the Adams Cemetery in Rolla.
