This past Saturday the Ozark Heritage Project sponsored an afternoon and evening of free boat rides on the Upper Current River. The event took place at Pulltite Campground in northern Shannon County and was intended to highlight one of the specific areas that will be severely impacted if the Proposed Alternative B of the new General Draft Management Plan for the Ozark National scenic Riverways. Several of the almost fifty guests commented on the lack of wake left by the outboards which now utilize water pumps—“jets”—on the lower units to stay even higher above the submerged gravel. The Proposed Alternative B would totally eliminate outboard motors years round on the section of Current River above Pulltite and a similar section on Jacks Fork. It would also further restrict motor sizes on the rest of the river. Several guests came as families and were treated to boat rides, a trip to the restored cabin just downstream and Cave Springs several miles upstream. The National Park Service will hold an open house tonight at the Van Buren Youth and Community Center at the intersection of Business Highway 60 and Route D starting at 6:00 PM with the Wilderness hearing from 8:00 to 9:00. The second open house meeting will be held in Salem at the Salem City Hall Auditorium Wednesday morning from 10:00 until noon. The final open house will be Wednesday evening in Kirkwood at the Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center at 11715 Cragwold Road from 6:00 to 8:00 followed by the Wilderness Hearing from 8:00 to 9:00. If you are interested in commenting on the plan or want to find out more information, attend one or more of the open houses. The public comment period has been extended until February 7th and you can submit your comment online at the open houses or by going to www.parkplanning.nps.gov.ozar.
The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors will conduct a meeting tonight at the fire station beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda, there will be a review of the minutes from the December meeting. The Board will then pay bills and sign file copies and address the 2013 budget. There will be a calendar review as well as a review of the monthly reimbursement report. The Board will then address old or new business and there will be a report on the Toy Drive. The Board will then set the next monthly meeting for February 4th at the fire station beginning at 6:00 pm and then adjourn the regular meeting and vote to go into closed session if needed. The regular monthly meeting of the Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors meeting is open to the public.
The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released more of their reports. On Saturday, December 28
th deputies responded to the 500 block of County Road 2320 for a report of dead livestock. Upon arrival, deputies discovered that a 49-year old Salem male was the reported victim of a livestock killing. He stated that the steer was killed and then had partially skinned, with meat having been removed from the carcass. Cost to replace the steer was approximately $1,200. Suspect information was not given and the investigation is ongoing. On Wednesday, January 1
st, the Dent County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call in reference to a fight at the Horse Shoe Saloon. The caller stated that there were numerous subjects involved. Upon arrival, a male subject was found lying on the floor and was requesting an ambulance. It was determined that during the fight a male subject identified as 56-year old Anthony Miller of Salem had pulled a knife out of his pocket and had made threats to stab a 33-year old Salem male. Miller was transported to Salem Memorial District Hospital to be treated for injuries received during the fight. The investigation is ongoing at this time. Also on January 1
st, deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for an equipment violation at the intersection of Fourth Street and Highway 19. As a result of a consent search, a pipe was found that field-tested positive for Marijuana. As a result, 38-year old Michael Taggert of Salem was arrested for possession of marijuana under 35 grams. He was transported to the Dent County Jail and later released on a summons to appear in court. On Thursday, January 2
nd, deputies responded to the 6000 block of Highway 19 North for a report of a theft. Upon arrival, deputies discovered that a locked shed had been broken into and two Stihl chainsaw's, valued at $1,700, were taken. The incident remains under investigation. On January 4
th at 10:16 in the evening, deputies responded to a reported burglary in the 2000 block of Highway YY. Jewelry and prescription medication were reported to have been stolen from the residence. The total value of all reported stolen property, as given by the residents, is $1,554.00.
