The Salem Area Community Betterment Association (SACBA) will hold its annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner to honor volunteer citizens and organizations on Tuesday, February 16^th.  The dinner will be held at The Gathering Place, Grace Community Church at 6:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the TCRC, the Visitors Center and from SACBA board members. Nominations for the Gift of Time awards and the Gift of Time Honor Roll are sought. The categories for volunteer recognition are:  Education, Community Enhancement, Arts and Culture, Youth (an adult or adult organization), Youth (a youth or youth organization), Humanitarianism, and Historic Preservation.  Any citizen may nominate any individual and/or any organization that has made a significant volunteer contribution to the community during 2009. An anonymous panel of citizens will select the Gift of Time awardees. The Gift of Time awards will be presented and all nominees will be honored at the Volunteer Recognition Dinner. Nomination forms will be available beginning January 7^th in town at the Salem Library, the Salem TCRC, the Bank of Salem, US Bank, Progressive Ozark Bank and Town and Country Bank. Nominations must be submitted to SACBA (P.O. Box 732, Salem, MO 65560) no later than 5:00 p.m. on January 30^th.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a traffic violation, shoplifting, a commitment order, and a domestic disturbance. On Tuesday, December 29^th at 9:04 p.m. a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. Investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 30 year-old male of Licking on a warrant from Dent County.  Further investigation led to the arrest of the passenger of the vehicle, a 31 year-old female of Licking for possession of a controlled substance and on a felony warrant from Texas County. The male suspect was given a court date and released on bond, and the female suspect was incarcerated pending a warrant application and extradition from Texas County. On Wednesday, December 30^th at 3:29 p.m. an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. Investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 42 year-old male of Bunker for stealing food items valued at $9.65. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Thursday, December 31^st at 6:54 p.m. officers transported a 47 year-old male of Chesterfield and a 25 year-old female of Maryland Heights to Phelps County Center for Psychiatric Services in lieu of mental commitment orders. On Friday, January 1^st at 4:24 a.m. an officer was detailed to the 200 block of South Henderson in reference to a domestic disturbance. Investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 25 year-old female of Salem for 3^rd degree domestic assault. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. The Dent County Service Unit of The Salvation Army would like to announce that they have raised a total of $20,680.16 during the 2009 Christmas Kettle Campaign, which is very close to reaching their goal of $21,000. The local Salvation Army Board and this year’s Christmas Campaign Chairman, Scott Shults with Progressive Ozark Bank, would like to thank everyone who made monetary donations at the kettles or through the local mail appeal. They also extend their greatest appreciation to the dedicated volunteers that took time out of their busy holiday season to ring the bells at the kettles. Your continued generosity will be distributed throughout 2010 to those less fortunate in Dent County.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving shoplifting and well being check. On Friday, January 1^st at 6:00 p.m. an officer was detailed to Highway 32 West to Wal-Mart in reference to shoplifting that led to the arrest of a 38-year old Salem man for stealing $53.00 worth of merchandise. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Saturday, January 2^nd at 10:00 a.m. an officer was dispatched to the 1000 block of East Hawkins in reference to a well-being check. Investigation was in conjunction with Dent County Coroner Gina White who pronounced 85-year-old Wandul Taylor deceased.
