The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of December. During the month, they wrote 15 traffic tickets, 15 warning tickets and 16 equipment repair orders. They served 14 summons to appear in court and one fugitive warrant. The Salem Police Department investigated nine accidents, two assaults, and one domestic assault. The Police Department also investigated 11 reports of stealing, seven reports of property damage, one report of disorderly conduct, seven domestic violence reports, two reports of driving while drivers license is revoked, one report of a minor in possession of intoxicants, one report of a missing person, one report of trespassing and one report of leaving the scene of an accident. They also investigated two reports of possession of drug paraphernalia. The Salem Police Department conducted one death investigation during the month of December. They received 1,470 calls for service during the month, handled 70 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 51 calls to the animal control officer. They also spent 14 hours in court testifying, three hours as court bailiff and spent 12 hours teaching D.A.R.E. The calls in December included 40 calls for escorts, one 9-1-1 calls, three intoxicated driver investigation calls, one call for a suspicious person or vehicle, one call for a peace disturbance, three ambulance assist calls, six calls for alarms sounding, three calls for fights in progress, seven domestic dispute calls, two fire calls and two wreckers were needed. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 7,711 miles and arrested 12 males and four females during the month of December.

The City of Salem Municipal Election will be held on Tuesday, April 5th and time is running out for those wishing to file for a seat on any of the local school boards, fire protection district board, hospital board or for either East or West Ward Aldermanic seats in Salem. The Oak Hill R-I school board has three 3-year terms available and incumbents Randy Parker and Duane Blackwell have filed. The Green Forest R-II board has three 3-year terms with incumbents Amber Toman, Rick Shults and Scott Shults having filed for those positions. At the Dent-Phelps R-III, there are three 3-year terms available. Incumbent Toby Toman has filed and Tad Headrick has also filed. There are three 3-year terms on the Northwood R-IV school board. Incumbents Jenna Dunn and Helania Wulff have filed along with Vickie Martin and Mark McSwain. The Salem R-80 Board of Education has three 3-year terms available. Incumbent Clifton Parker has filed along with Karen Kinder and Rowdy Mackley. Incumbent Joe Hayes has filed for the one 6-year term that is available on the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors. The City of Salem has one East Ward and one West Ward Aldermanic seat, which are two-year terms. Philip Giacomelli has filed for the West Ward Aldermanic seat and Dr. Haydn Powell Jr. has filed for the East Ward Aldermanic seat. Filings will continue at the respective schools, the fire station, and hospital and at the city administrative office until 5:00 pm on Tuesday, January 18th.

The United States Attorney’s Office announced that 40-year old Larry T. Nason of Rolla, was sentenced December 30th to 30 months in prison for illegal possession of a firearm.  Due to his previous criminal history, he is forbidden by law to own or possess a firearm. This case was investigated by the South Central Drug Task Force and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.  Assistant United States Attorney Jeannette Graviss handled the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The Salem Area Community Betterment Association (SACBA) will hold its annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner to honor volunteer citizens and organizations on Tuesday, February 15th. The dinner will be held at The Gathering Place, Grace Community Church at 6:30 p.m.  Tickets may be purchased at the TCRC, the Visitors Center and from SACBA board members. Nominations for the Gift of Time awards and the Gift of Time Honor Roll are sought. The categories for volunteer recognition are:  Education, Community Enhancement, Arts and Culture, Humanitarianism, Historic Preservation and Youth (an adult or adult organization, or a youth or youth organization). Any citizen may nominate any individual and/or any organization that has made a significant volunteer contribution to the community during 2010. An anonymous panel of citizens will select the Gift of Time awardees.  The Gift of Time awards will be presented and all nominees honored at the Volunteer Recognition Dinner. Nomination forms are available beginning January 7th at the Salem Library, the TCRC, the Bank of Salem, US Bank, Progressive Ozark Bank and Town and Country Bank. Nominations must be submitted to SACBA (Box 732, Salem, MO 65560) no later than 5:00 p.m. on January 31st.

The City of Salem Winter Youth Basketball Program is just around the corner. The Winter Youth Basketball Program is for boys and girls currently enrolled in grades 1st through 6th. Sign-ups will be held at the Salem Freedom Activity Center located at 1201 West Rolla Road in the Foyer today and tomorrow from 4:00 to 6:00 pm; Saturday, January 8th from 9:00 until noon and then again next Thursday and Friday, January 13th and 14th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. Kim English made 6-of-9 three-point tries to end with 20 points, as ninth-ranked Missouri cruised past North Alabama, 98-58, in a game that served as a tune up before the Tigers head into their Big 12 Conference schedule on Saturday against Colorado. Missouri (14-1) was led by Laurence Bowers' and Justin Safford's 16 point showings. Bowers also hauled in 11 rebounds. Marcus Denmon had 12 points and six rebounds, while Matt Pressey, Michael Dixon and Ricky Kreklow each posted 10 points for the Tigers, who have won nine straight since their lone loss to Georgetown on November 30. Mizzou extended its non-conference home winning streak to 57 straight games. Missouri will be at Colorado Saturday at noon.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will be there three-game winning streak on the line as they host the St. James Tigers tonight. JV action will begin at 6:00 with the varsity game to follow.

The St. Louis Blues will be in Toronto tonight to face the Maple Leafs. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting at 6:00.

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed free agent wide receiver Kevin Curtis. The AFC West champions also added tight end Cody Slate to the practice squad and placed safety/cornerback Donald Washington on injured reserve.

Bert Blyleven and Roberto Alomar have been elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. After falling short in his previous 13 tries and coming within five votes of election in 2010, Blyleven was named on 463 ballots and received 79.7 percent of the vote, while Alomar, in just his second year on the ballot, garnered 523 votes for a total of 90 percent. In addition, the Class of 2011 will also include former general manager Pat Gillick, who was a Veterans Committee selection, as well as Ford C. Frick Award winner Dave Van Horne and Spink Award winner Bill Conlin.

Funeral services for Gail A. (Fenton) Schwegel of Bentonville, Arkansas, age 59, will be held Friday at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Salem Chapel. Visitation will be tonight from 7:00 to 9:00. Interment will be in the Sam Crocker Cemetery in Bixby.

Memorial services for Francis “Mike” Scherer of Salem, age 69, will be held at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the Salem Public Library or American Cancer Society. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.

Private family services will be held at a later date for Opal D. Lindsey of Salem, age 79. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
