The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse with two new commissioners. Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles introduced first District Commissioner Dennis Purcell and Second District Commissioner Gary Larson. Laurie Walker was in attendance to find out if the county had ordinances on animal abuse and Skiles thought the county followed the state statute but that she should check with the Sheriff’s Office to be sure. Bernie English was there to discuss the debris issue from the flood and why it was put on his property, but the new commissioners didn’t know. They said that if the debris were the county’s problem, they would clean it up. He also asked about the installation of a culvert to divert water on Dent County Road 6080, and why additional gravel was added to his road making it into a pond. The commissioners said that they would check into it. In the road report, both commissioners said that the roads are too frozen too grade much. District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 5015, workers would be out checking signs, work was being done on grader 24, and the crew was getting the spreaders ready to go in case of adverse weather. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grader 25 has an oil leak and Fabick has been contacted to repair it. He said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 2240 and 3300, and workers will be out picking up tires and checking signs. Larson then suggested that since the county commission is required to have only four meetings a year to meet state statutes, let the commission hold four evening meetings, one per quarter, to keep the public informed. The commission approved the suggestion. Presiding Commissioner Skiles said that he would be attending the MRPC meeting Thursday night and invited both new commissioners to attend. He also discussed the commission review a tentative agenda notice that would be posted for the public and the media. The commissioners will review what other commissions do before making a decision on the agenda. Skiles said that one commissioner will need to serve on the extension council and one will need to serve on the tourism committee and they should discuss that between themselves before an appointment is made. Commissioner Purcell then asked for a formal review of what offices should move into the annex. He said since a lot of work still needs to be done to get the building ADA compliant, painted and carpeted, the commission should be sure that the county would be reimbursed by other counties for the moving of the juvenile offices. The commissioners agreed to discuss the issue further with people in those offices who would know what it would take to move their offices to the annex. The next meting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

Current economic conditions are forcing companies around the world to take steps to enable them to continue to operate profitably. The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers lost to St. Clair Monday night to fall to 4-7 on the year. They will be back in action Thursday night when they host St. James. You can hear that game on KSMO Radio.

The Salem Boys Varsity Basketball Tigers will try to break a four-game losing streak when they host the Licking Wildcats tonight at the SHS Gym. Salem comes into the game with a 3-7 record. You can hear the varsity game at 7:10 on KSMO radio and online at ksmoradio.com. The JV game will start at 6:00.

The Missouri Tigers will host Coppin State tonight at the Mizzou Arena. Missouri comes into the game with a 12-2 record. KSMO will join the game in progress at the end of the Salem Tiger game.

Colt McCoy's 26-yard touchdown pass to Quan Cosby with 16 seconds remaining lifted third-ranked Texas to a 24-21 Fiesta Bowl win over No. 10 Ohio State, as the Buckeyes were dealt another crushing defeat in a BCS postseason contest. McCoy, named the game's offensive MVP, finished 41-of-59 for 414 yards through the air, while Cosby had a spectacular performance in his last collegiate game, making 14 catches for 171 yards and a pair of scores for the Longhorns (12-1).

St. Louis Cardinals have signed left-handed relief pitcher Royce Ring to a one-year contract. Ring played last year for Atlanta where he went 1-2 with a 8.29 ERA.

Kansas City Royals have agreed to terms with pitcher Roman Colon on a minor league contract.
