The City of Salem Board of Alderman has adopted a new and revised Yard Waste Policy, effective January 1, 2012. Pickup days will be on the 1^st and 3^rd Mondays of each month. Acceptable yard waste includes; lawn trimmings (grass/weeds), leaves and/or small brush, all of which MUST be bagged in biodegradable bags, which are available at the City Administrative Offices located at 400 North Iron. The City will NO longer accept un-bagged brush or limbs, except: after severe weather the City will approve the pickup and removal of un-bagged yard waste, including limbs and brush cut into 4-foot lengths, up to a dump truck load. Subsequent loads must be arranged through the City Administrative Offices and will cost $40 per load. In addition, one day in the Spring and one day in the Fall will be designated as Special Clean Up Days, in which the City will accept the same yard waste as described after severe weather. These two (2) Special Clean Up Days will be announced at the preceding Aldermanic meeting and through local media. The City also maintains a designated dumpsite in the City’s Industrial Park that is solely dedicated to yard waste. The City encourages all residents to utilize this area, free of charge, with the understanding that the site is strictly for yard waste only. Items such as appliances, trash, lumber, wood products, fencing, home improvement waste, furniture and other material not specifically defined as yard waste in the policy are strictly prohibited and violators may be subject to a fine.  For a complete copy of the City of Salem Yard Waste Policy, or for more information, contact the City Administrative Offices by calling 729-4811.

The United States Attorney’s Office announced that William P. Haynes, Jr., was sentenced to 18 months in prison for his possession of child pornography. Haynes, age 60 of Rolla, pled guilty in September 2011 and appeared recently for sentencing before United States District Judge Audrey G. Fleissig.  The Rolla Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated this case. 

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving an attempted theft of a vehicle, property damage, and mail theft. On Tuesday, December 27^th at 3:22 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to C&E Auto in reference to an attempted theft of a vehicle.  The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown attempted to steal a white 1995 Ford F-150 truck but was unsuccessful. On Thursday, December 29^th at 10:56 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of East Hawkins in reference to property damage. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown damaged a white 1994 Ford E-350 motor home. The value of the damage is approximately $25. Then at 4:40 that afternoon, an officer was contacted at the police station in reference to mail theft. The investigation of the report revealed the United States Postal service had located mail that had been gone through and opened before reaching its destination. Anyone with any information regarding the attempted theft of a vehicle, property damage or mail theft reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

Hunters shot 15,238 deer during the muzzleloader portion of Missouri’s firearms deer season, the second-largest muzzleloader harvest on record. Top harvest counties were Oregon with 314, Franklin with 285 and Callaway with 281. This year’s muzzleloader harvest was up 18 percent from last year and fell just short of the record 15,907 deer checked during the 2009 muzzleloader hunt. Missouri held its first muzzleloader season in 1988. Back then, hunters had to declare if they intended to use a muzzleloader or a center-fire rifle. That first year, the muzzleloader season was three days long. Since then, many of the original restrictions on muzzleloader hunting have been relaxed. In 1999, Missouri Department Conservation eliminated the separate muzzleloader deer permit, allowing hunters to buy one permit and hunt with muzzleloaders during the muzzleloader season and with center-fire rifles during the November and antlerless portions of deer season. By then, muzzleloader season was nine days long. Now it runs for 11 days. In 2009, MDC reversed the order of the muzzleloader and antlerless seasons, putting the muzzleloader hunt in the last half of December to provide a better quality hunt for muzzleloader hunters. The muzzleloader harvest increased by 55 percent that year, surpassing 15,000 for the first time. When Missouri had its first muzzleloader hunt 23 years ago, most commercially available muzzleloaders were traditional caplock and flintlock types, and muzzleloader season was a practical exercise in hunting history. Today, most hunters use in-line muzzleloaders, often with telescopic sights. Modern propellants and bullets have changed dramatically from black powder and round lead balls, leading to improvements in ballistic performance. The loading process remains essentially the same as in pioneer days, but the accuracy of modern, in-line muzzleloaders is similar to those of single-shot, center-fire rifles.

The City of Salem Planning and Zoning Board of Commissioners will be holding a workshop at 6:00 Monday, January 9^th at the Salem TCRC classroom at 1200 West Rolla Road to review the Planning and Zoning Board policies, procedures and regulations. The workshop is open to the public. The workshop was called by Chairman Jerry Craig of the Planning and Zoning Board.
