Captain Lee Ann H. Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I announced the traffic crash and DWI enforcement totals for both the Christmas and New Year’s counting periods for the six-county Troop I area. During the Christmas counting period, which began at 6 p.m., Thursday, December 23^rd, and ended at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, December 26, Troop I officers investigated 87 traffic crashes that resulted in 17 injuries and no fatalities. Troopers also made three arrests for driving while intoxicated. Over the same period in 2009, officers assigned to Troop I investigated 27 traffic crashes, which resulted in seven injuries and no fatalities. In 2009, one arrest was made for driving while intoxicated. During the New Year’s counting period, which began at 6 p.m., Friday, December 31^st, 2010, and ended at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, January 2^nd, 2011, Troop I officers investigated 14 traffic crashes, which resulted in eight injuries and no fatalities. During that period, troopers made five arrests for driving while intoxicated. During last year’s New Year’s counting period, which was one day longer than 2011, Troop I officers investigated 56 traffic crashes, resulting in 15 injuries and no fatalities. During that period they also made 10 arrests for driving while intoxicated.  

An accident occurred Tuesday morning at 9:40 in Osage County on Highway 63 about a mile north of county road 632. According to the highway patrol report, a 1996 Ford driven by 46-year old Mickel Yount of Greenville had slowed down on Highway 63 and was struck from behind by a 2005 Dodge driven by 70-year old Thomas Dixon of Salem. The Ford traveled off of Highway 63 onto a private road and struck several trees. Yount suffered serious injuries and was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Jefferson City. Dixon and a passenger, 69-year old Theresa Dixon of Salem, both suffered minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene. Yount was the only one not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford and the Dodge were totaled and removed from the scene by Beck Motors of Freeburg.

An accident occurred on December 27^th at the intersection of Highway 32-72 and 19 at 1:14 in the afternoon. According to the Salem Police report, a southbound 2006 Chevrolet 2 ½ ton moving truck driven by Taylor Hoffman of Salem slowly started in traffic and made contact with a 2010 Chrysler Town & Country driven by Thomas Parsons of Rolla, who was stopped in traffic. Both vehicles sustained no apparent damage. Parsons suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital for treatment.

Superintendent Reed Detring announced that Ozark National Scenic Riverways (Park) is inviting public comment on a proposal to rehabilitate and upgrade the Park’s radio system to narrowband digital. Two new repeater sites, at Cedar Grove and Rymer Ridge, would be developed within park boundaries as part of the proposed upgrade. The proposed repeater site is approximately a half-mile northwest of Cedar Grove off Dent County Road 651. The proposed site was once a ranger station. The new tower and equipment enclosure will be within the perimeter of the site compound. The proposed 199-foot tower would be a self-supporting type that does not require guy wires. The new radio system would require installation of one microwave radio with an integrated antenna and a VHF repeater antenna on the new tower. The Rymer Ridge site is an undeveloped repeater site. The proposed site is southeast of Jacks Fork near the Rymer’s facilities. The site is located on a ridge near commercial power, and is accessible from Route M via an old logging trace. Because the old logging trace is curved, views of the proposed site would be obscured from the main road. An area approximately 75-foot x 75-foot would be cleared of trees, brush, and vegetation for the communications site compound. The new tower and equipment enclosure would be within the perimeter of the site compound. The proposed 150-foot tower would be a self-supporting type that does not require guy wires. The new radio system would require the installation of a tower mounted microwave radio, 4-foot dish antenna, and a VHF repeater antenna on the new tower. Both sites would have 6-foot high chain link security fence would be installed around the site perimeter. A 30-day public comment period about the proposal to rehabilitate and upgrade the Park’s radio system to narrowband digital has just begun and input is being solicited to help define any issues to be addressed in an upcoming Environmental Assessment (EA).  Public comments received during this 30-day “scoping” period will be used to develop the EA.  Public review and comments on the EA will also be invited when it is released later next year.
