The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 7:00 pm. During the hearing of persons, Molly Malone of Verkamp & Malone, CPA’s will present the audit report for 2007/2008 (July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008) to the Board. City Attorney Nanci Wisdom will then give a report on the public hearing held at 6:45 of the Planning & Zoning Commission for the consideration of the subdivision lot at 904 North Pershing owned by Joe Lato. After the consent agenda in unfinished business, City Clerk Mary Happel will present the cost of changing the Lagers Plan from LT8 to L6 as requested by the Board at a previous meeting. Alderman Jim Jackson and Kenneth Nash will discuss miscellaneous items involving the City of Salem. Alderman Jim McDaniels would also like an update on extending the city limits, the airport improvements and would like to discuss the 2009 budget. Alderman Bill Riley would like to discuss the water problem at Henderson and Hunt by Carl Hale’s residence, parking on Rolla Road and the city dump trucks. Mayor Gary Brown will then discuss items involving the City, give an update on well #4, a storm update and then give his comments on items. During the introduction and reading of bills, Bill #3147 an ordinance amending section 7-16 of the code of ordinances of the City of Salem on the application and/or renewal of business licenses. At the previous Board of Alderman meeting the Board approved this ordinance for adopting the new state statute requirement of showing proof that a business is current in the payment of their sales taxes. This ordinance is to adopt the new state statute. After approval of bills presented by City Clerk Mary Happel, the Board may then vote to go into Closed Session. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman, along with the public hearing of the Planning & Zoning Commission, are open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving forgery, a disturbance, theft and property damage. On December 28th at 4:13 p.m. an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a forgery. The report revealed that a stolen checkbook had been used to write checks to BP Convenience Store and Wal-Mart for a total of $43.41. On December 30th at 12:27 p.m. a vehicle was stopped for investigation of a disturbance that had occurred at Right Way Homes on Carnett Drive. The stop led to the arrest of a 27-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, damage to city property and escape from custody. He was issued summons to appear in court and was incarcerated. On December 31st at 11:20 a.m. an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a forgery. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown forged two checks at Wal-Mart for a total of $151.86. At 3:30 p.m. that afternoon, an officer was sent to Sears on Highway 32-72 East in reference to a theft.  The report revealed that a person or persons unknown had taken a red and silver Manco two-seater go-kart valued at $1999.00, and a black and silver Craftsman 27 ton log splitter valued $1420.00 from the front of the store. On January 1st at 7:01 a.m. an officer was detailed to the 700 block of East Center in reference to damage to a vehicle. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown cut three tires on a white 2002 GMC truck. The value of the damage is approximately $315.00. Anyone with any information regarding the thefts, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers lost their fourth straight game as they lost to West Plains in overtime Saturday night, 56-53. Salem was led in scoring by Phillip Moser with 20 points and C.J. Smith added 13 points. Salem is 3-7 on the year and they will host Licking Tuesday night at the SHS Gym.

The Salem Lady Tigers also lost to West Plains Saturday in the make-up game by the score of 55-33. The Lady Tigers will be back at it tonight as they host the Lady Dogs of St. Clair starting with the JV contest at 6:00 with the varsity game to follow. The Lady Tigers are 4-6 on the year.

Alex Steen had a goal and two assists while Manny Legace made 20 saves as the St. Louis Blues downed the Columbus Blue Jackets, 5-2, at Scottrade Center. Brandon Crombeen had a goal and an assist while Brad Winchester, Keith Tkachuk and T.J. Oshie each had a goal for the Blues, who snapped a three-game losing streak. The Blues will be off until Friday night as they will hit the road for three straight games.

DeMarre Carroll and Zaire Taylor each scored 17 points, helping lift the Missouri Tigers to an 83-76 win over the Georgia Bulldogs in a non-conference tilt at Stegeman Coliseum. All five starters scored in double figures for the Tigers (12-2), who are off to their best start since the 1998-99 campaign. Leo Lyons deposited 12 points, while J.T. Tiller and Matt Lawrence finished with 10 apiece. Missouri will play Coppin State tomorrow night at 8:00.
