The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. At the meeting, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be finishing up in the Turtle, Gladden and Jadwin areas, and a crew would be checking road signs. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be finishing up in the Stone Hill area and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 333. Tune also said that crews would be checking road signs and catching up on routine maintenance.  Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he would be attending the Attorney Generals Ethics Training in Jefferson City on Tuesday January 9th. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley received a letter from Dent County Prosecuting Attorney Jessica Sparks stating that she hired Katie Anderson as Assistant Prosecuting Attorney and that will be effective immediately when the letter of resignation from present Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Mark Weaver is received. Curley also reported that a representative from SEMA called and informed the clerk’s office that Dent County was not available for federal assistance for clean-up of December’s ice storm.  The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

An accident occurred Thursday morning at 3:25 in Dent County on Route J. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Ford driven by 51-year old Wayne Becker of Salem was traveling eastbound on Route J and struck a deer. A passenger in the Ford, 42-year old John Stogsdill of Rolla, a prisoner, suffered minor injuries and was taken by Dent County Deputies to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The Ford sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Whitakers Towing.

The Missouri Department of Economic Development released their reports for unemployment for the month of November 2006. In Dent County, the unemployment rate for November 2006 was 6.6%, up slightly from the 6.3% rate in October 2006, and the same as the 6.6% rate from November of 2005. In Crawford County, the unemployment rate rose to 6.5% for November 2006 rate from 5.9% in October 2006, but was just above the November 2005 rate of 6.1%. In Reynolds County, the unemployment rate for November 2006 was 7.7%, up over a point from the 6.6% rate in October 2006, up a full point from the 7.6% rate for November 2005.  In Phelps County, the unemployment rate fell to 4.2% in November 2006, which is the same as the 4.2% rate from November 2005, and that is down slightly from the 4.4% rate in October 2006.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will be in St. Clair tonight to face the Bulldogs starting at 6:00 with the JV action followed by the varsity contest at about 7:20. You can hear the varsity game on KSMO starting at 7:10 with Tiger Talk and Coach Travis Wrightsman.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will travel to Willow Springs to face the Lady Bears Monday at 6:00 starting with JV action. You can hear the varsity game on KSMO at 7:20.

The Missouri Basketball Tigers will be back in action against Iowa State tomorrow at 4:30 to begin their Big 12 play. Missouri is 10-2 on the year. You can hear the game on KSMO.

Manny Legace stopped 28 shots for his second shutout of the season to help the St. Louis Blues to a 2-0 win over the Chicago Blackhawks at Scottrade Center. Lee Stempniak and Dennis Wideman each scored power play goals for the Blues, who have won three of their last four games, and have gone 5-1-3 in their last nine games. St. Louis has not given up a first period goal in 12 consecutive games, which is a franchise record and also ties the NHL record set by the 1974 Los Angeles Kings. St. Louis travels to Nashville for a game on Saturday and you can hear the contest on KSMO starting at 7:00.

San Diego Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson added one more accomplishment to his remarkable season on Thursday, as he was named the Associated Press' Most Valuable Player for the 2006 campaign. New York Jets quarterback Chad Pennington was named the 2006 Comeback Player of the Year, also announced by the Associated Press.

Funeral services for Ellen Roney of Salem, age 84, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Interment will be in the Greeley Cemetery in Bunker. Memorials may be made to the Greeley Cemetery Association.

Funeral services for Stuart D. Wilson of St. James, age 72, will be held Saturday morning at 9:30 at St. James Christian Church of St. James. Visitation will be today from 5:30 to 8:30 at James & Gahr Chapel in St. James. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Wilson family.

Funeral services for Mina C. Steiner of Rolla, age 80, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation is from 10:00 until service time. A Memorial Mass will be held at 2:00 at the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Rolla. Interment will be in the Rolla Cemetery.

Funeral services for Jackie Lane Curley of Rolla, formerly of Salem, age 50, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Mt. Herman Cemetery.

Graveside services for John Rainey Gann of Steelville, age 72, will be held Saturday at 3:30 at the Steelville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 3:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

Funeral services for Viola Mae Beckett of Salem, age 83, will be held Sunday in the Murray Funeral Home in Creston, Ohio. Memorials are suggested to the New Harmony Cemetery.

Funeral services for Don Riebel of Westerville, Ohio, formerly of Steelville, age 63, will be held Monday at 11:00 at the Presbyterian Church in Steelville. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 to 8:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery. 

Funeral services for Martha “Lorene” L. McCormick, nee Gamblin, of Hillsboro, formerly of Salem, age 67, will be held Monday at 12:30 at the Heiligtag-Lang-Fendler Funeral Home in Arnold.
