The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles was unable to attend due to illness. District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell presided in Skiles absence. In the road report Purcell said that crews were continuing to remove snow and apply sand and salt to slick spots throughout District 1. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that crews in District 2 were also addressing snow removal and slick spots. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that a tentative budget for public view would be available on January 15th. The budget approval hearing was set for January 28th. Phone bids for fuel for the Road and Bridge Department were received at Monday’s meeting. MFA gas had the lowest bid at $2.87 per gallon for gasoline and Phil Mart had the lowest bid for diesel at $3.16 per gallon. Commissioner Purcell noted that there would be a ribbon cutting and dedication of the Swiney Bridge on January 8th. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday at 9:00 at the Dent County Courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.
Intercounty Electric Cooperative is sponsoring the January 8th Salem Area Chamber members’ luncheon meeting. This meeting will be held at Southwest Baptist University, 501 S Grand, beginning at noon. Karen McNew, Manager of Member Services and Development, will be speaking on how the co-ops are addressing current energy needs and challenges for the future. The Mark Twain National Forest will have a number of internship opportunities in 2013 for college students who have an interest in, and are majoring in, recreation management or similar fields. Opportunities are available throughout the forest, and may be located on any one of the forest’s district offices. In some cases, interns may work with the forest to work on one district for at least half of their internship, and then work on another district or Supervisor’s Office for another portion of their internship. When desired, the forest will try to give a variety of tasks within the recreation field, including developed recreation operations and maintenance, trails, wilderness, and other areas. The interns will also be allowed to shadow or assist for a few days in one or more other functions. Most interns are required to pass a background check. Interns are also required to have a valid state driver’s license, to take defensive driving, and to have a relatively clean driving record. Most recreation interns will be required to work on Saturdays, and may also work on Sundays. Actual work schedule will be negotiated, but expect to work 4-5 hours per week if you are receiving housing or a housing subsidy. You will need to provide boots and suitable clothing for the job assignments, and to utilize the gloves, hard hast, and other safety gear provided. While most opportunities are for volunteers, Mark Twain National Forest has some options to off-set or re-imburse students for some expenses they may incur as a result of their internship. Captain Lee Ann H. Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announced the traffic crash and DWI enforcement totals for both the Christmas and New Year’s counting periods for the six-county Troop I area. During the Christmas counting period, which began at 6 p.m., Friday, December 21st, and ended at 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, December 25th, Troop I officers investigated 17 traffic crashes that resulted in seven injuries and no fatalities. Troopers also made seven arrests for driving while intoxicated. Over the same period in 2011, officers assigned to Troop I investigated 14 traffic crashes, which resulted in four injuries and one fatality. In 2011, six arrests were made for driving while intoxicated. During the New Year’s counting period, which began at 6 p.m., Friday, December 28th, and ended at 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, January 1st, Troop I officers investigated 54 traffic crashes, which resulted in 18 injuries and no fatalities. During that period, troopers made four arrests for driving while intoxicated. During the 2012 New Year’s counting period, Troop I officers investigated 14 traffic crashes, resulting in four injuries and one fatality. They also made seven arrests for driving while intoxicated last year.
There will be an Introduction to Gigging workshop held at the Twin Pines Conservation Education Center on Saturday, January 19th from 5:00 to 10:00 pm for the general public. After a short classroom session on the regulations and fishes legal for gigging, participants will carpool to the Eminence City Park. After trying their hand at gigging on the Jacks Fork River under the guiding hand of local conservation agents and naturalists, each gigger will learn to properly prepare and cook a riverside feast of suckers, fried potatoes and hushpuppies. There is no cost for the program but space is limited and anglers should make sure they are legal to fish in MO waters. Those between the ages of 15 and 65 will need the appropriate permits. The Salem Tigers scored 29 points in the 2nd quarter to open a 43-19 lead at half time as they cruised to a 71-33 win over the Steelville Cardinals in the Owensville Tournament. Salem was led in scoring by Chad Elliott with 17 points followed by Brady Floyd with 12 points and Zack Elliott with 10 more. Salem is now 3-6 on the year and they will play Saturday at 4:00 in the consolation championship game against Linn who defeated Owensville by the score of 52-31. The Salem Lady Tigers won a back and forth affair in Bunker against the Lady Eagles Wednesday night, 50-48. Cameron Kuhn led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 15 points while Savannah Hanning and Gabby Sanderson each added nine points. Salem moved to 7-5 on the season and played St. James at the SHS gym Thursday night. In that game, the St. James Lady Tigers ran away with a 69-37 victory over the Salem Lady Tigers. Savannah Hanning led Salem in scoring with 11 points while Gabby Sanderson added 9 points. Salem drops to 7-6 on the year and will play at Ava on Monday.
The 12th ranked Missouri Tiger basketball squad will host Bucknell Saturday afternoon. Mizzou is 10-2 on the year and you’ll be able to hear the game on KSMO Radio starting at 2:30.
