The Dent County Service Unit of The Salvation Army would like to announce that they have successfully reached their $21,000 goal during the Christmas Kettle Campaign. The local Salvation Army Board and Christmas Campaign Chairman, David Dittman, would like to thank everyone who made monetary donations at the kettles or through the local mail appeal. They also extend their greatest appreciation to the dedicated volunteers that took time out of their busy holiday season to ring the bells at the kettles. Your continued generosity will be distributed throughout 2011 to those less fortunate in Dent County.

The Salem Board of Aldermen met for their regular meeting Monday evening at the city hall council chambers. The board approved the high bid from Jadwin Fire Department for a surplus rotating light bar with directional arrow for $203.50 and a bid from Marty Farrar for $79.39 for the rotating light bar without the directional arrow. In the consent agenda, the city received $15,681.68 in C.A.R.T. tax revenues in the month of December. Mayor Gary Brown distributed storm siren guidelines to the Aldermen. They state that the storm sirens will sound if a tornado warning has been issued for Dent County and the warning’s path cast specifically mentions Salem in the path of the storm. Also, they will sound the siren if a report has been received of a previously unwarned tornado that has touched down and damage to trees and/or structures has occurred. Sirens will sound when a severe thunderstorm warning indicates hurricane strength winds, 75 mph or greater are expected. Brown stated the city departments have implemented a miscellaneous equipment service log and vehicle service log. Alderman Jerry Randell suggested having a workshop before implementation to discuss possible inventory control be added to these logs. Brown reported that on January 1st electric rates from Sho-Me Power increased 9.5%, which is $3 per thousand-kilowatt hour. This totals an extra $197,975 to be paid to Sho-Me Power. The board approved Bill No. 3211 regulating the parking on the city hall auditorium parking lot on the east side of the building to two hour parking between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. In unfinished business, the board approved the extension of the temporary liquor license for Bigos Mexican Restaurant thru January 7th and they also approved a permanent license if the state issues a permanent license. Alderman Hadyn Powell made a motion for the board to look into the steps needed to re-create a city administration position including looking into the possibility of hiring a consulting firm to help find candidates for the position. The board approved the motion.  After the bills were approved, the meeting was adjourned.
