Thomas Haines, the Forest Service District Ranger, reports that permits for the removal of timber from the Bunker Area Derecho Fuels Project will be available very soon. The purpose of the project is to decrease the wildland fire risk to the community of Bunker and the surrounding areas by removing and reducing hazardous fuels. Some fuels may also be rearranged to allow for easier transportation. This project will not be done on a bid basis. Haines stated the area has been divided up into smaller lots and permits will be sold for each lot. Interested parties may buy permits for one lot at a time to ensure completion of the removal of the timber. The permit system is open to all interested residents and businesses, and he welcomes those interested in getting a permit to stop by the Forest Service office on Highway 19 or you can also call 729-6656. The final approval of any permits issued will be under the purview of District Ranger Thomas Haines.
