A Lecoma woman and her granddaughter lost their lives Friday morning as tornadoes raced through the area. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department responded to a trailer house being struck by a tornado on Dent County Road 2050. The Salem Memorial District Hospital EMS called Dent County Deputy Coroner Eddie Wilson, which pronounced 64-year old Loretta Lou Anderson of Lecoma dead at 11:10 am, from injuries from the trailer house being struck by a tornado. Anderson was found 50 yards from the original location in the field north of the residence. Anderson’s granddaughter, 21-year old Megan Ross was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla and was pronounced dead by the emergency room physician. Ross also died from injuries sustained from the trailer house being struck by a tornado. Loretta Anderson and her granddaughter Megan Ross were taken to the Null and Son Funeral Home in Rolla.

The City of Rolla Fire & Rescue says two people were killed and six injured in storms that moved through the area Friday morning. The two victims were identified as 69-year-old Alice Cox and her neighbor and best friend, 76-year old Ethyl Price. Cox died at the scene while Price died Saturday at the Phelps County Regional Medical Center from injuries sustained during the tornado and debris. At least 25 homes were damaged and eight others were leveled on Phelps County Roads 8030, 8040 and 8050.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their first meeting of the new-year tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda, in bids, the city had previously advertised for the sale of two rotating light bars, one with a directional arrow and one with out a directional arrow and will be addressed. Mayor Gary Brown will then update the Board with a public works report. After reports from the alderman, Bill # 3211 which is an ordinance regulating the parking of vehicles on the city owned parking lot located on the east side of the auditorium will be submitted for approval with the parking hours listed as 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. In new and miscellaneous business, the State of Missouri has issued an extension for the temporary license that was issued to Bigos. It was extended from December 29, 2010 to January 7, 2011. Bigos is requesting an extension from the City of Salem for the same period of time. City Clerk Mary Happel is requesting permission from the Board of Alderman that when the State of Missouri issues the permanent liquor license to Bigos, and as long as they meet the City’s requirements, that she be allowed to go ahead and issue the City’s permanent license that will be good from January 7th to June 30, 2011. At the last Board meeting, Alderman Powell asked about re-creating the City Administrator position and suggested hiring a consulting firm to find the right person if the Board decided to go this way. Alderman Powell made the recommendation to discuss the matter in more detail at this meeting. After approval of bills presented by the City Clerk, the Board may then vote to go into Closed Session. The City of Salem Board of Alderman meeting is open to the public.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has released their arrest reports from this past week involving three individuals from Salem. On Wednesday, December 29^th at 5:47 in the evening, 22 year-old Roy E. McWhorter was arrested on a Texas County warrant for a misdemeanor moving traffic violation and a Licking P.D. warrant for a misdemeanor non-moving traffic violation. McWhorter was taken to the Dent County Jail and was held on a 24-hour hold. On Thursday, December 30^th at 5:50 in the evening, 43 year-old James D. Ellis was arrested on a Dent County warrant for eight felony counts of statutory rape and eight felony counts of endangering the welfare of a child in the first degree. Ellis was taken to the Dent County Jail. On Saturday, January 1^st at 1:35 early in the morning, 36 year-old John C. Dotson was arrested on a Dent County warrant for two felony counts of statutory sodomy in the 1^st degree and two felony counts of child endangerment in the 1^st degree. Dotson was taken to the Dent County Jail.
