A Lecoma woman and her granddaughter lost their lives Friday morning as tornadoes raced through the area. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department responded to a trailer house being struck by a tornado on Dent County Road 2050. The Salem Memorial District Hospital EMS called Dent County Deputy Coroner Eddie Wilson, which pronounced 64-year old Loretta Lou Anderson of Lecoma dead at 11:10 am, from injuries from the trailer house being struck by a tornado. Anderson was found 50 yards from the original location in the field north of the residence. Anderson’s granddaughter, 21-year old Megan Ross was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla and was pronounced dead by the emergency room physician. Ross also died from injuries sustained from the trailer house being struck by a tornado. Loretta Anderson and her granddaughter Megan Ross were taken to the Null and Son Funeral Home in Rolla.

The City of Rolla Fire & Rescue says two people were killed and six injured in storms that moved through the area Friday morning. The two victims were identified as 69-year-old Alice Cox and her neighbor and best friend, 76-year old Ethyl Price. Cox died at the scene while Price died Saturday at the Phelps County Regional Medical Center from injuries sustained during the tornado and debris. At least 25 homes were damaged and eight others were leveled on Phelps County Roads 8030, 8040 and 8050.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their first meeting of the new-year tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda, in bids, the city had previously advertised for the sale of two rotating light bars, one with a directional arrow and one with out a directional arrow and will be addressed. Mayor Gary Brown will then update the Board with a public works report. After reports from the alderman, Bill # 3211 which is an ordinance regulating the parking of vehicles on the city owned parking lot located on the east side of the auditorium will be submitted for approval with the parking hours listed as 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. In new and miscellaneous business, the State of Missouri has issued an extension for the temporary license that was issued to Bigos. It was extended from December 29, 2010 to January 7, 2011. Bigos is requesting an extension from the City of Salem for the same period of time. City Clerk Mary Happel is requesting permission from the Board of Alderman that when the State of Missouri issues the permanent liquor license to Bigos, and as long as they meet the City’s requirements, that she be allowed to go ahead and issue the City’s permanent license that will be good from January 7th to June 30, 2011. At the last Board meeting, Alderman Powell asked about re-creating the City Administrator position and suggested hiring a consulting firm to find the right person if the Board decided to go this way. Alderman Powell made the recommendation to discuss the matter in more detail at this meeting. After approval of bills presented by the City Clerk, the Board may then vote to go into Closed Session. The City of Salem Board of Alderman meeting is open to the public.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has released their arrest reports from this past week involving three individuals from Salem. On Wednesday, December 29th at 5:47 in the evening, 22 year-old Roy E. McWhorter was arrested on a Texas County warrant for a misdemeanor moving traffic violation and a Licking P.D. warrant for a misdemeanor non-moving traffic violation. McWhorter was taken to the Dent County Jail and was held on a 24-hour hold. On Thursday, December 30th at 5:50 in the evening, 43 year-old James D. Ellis was arrested on a Dent County warrant for eight felony counts of statutory rape and eight felony counts of endangering the welfare of a child in the first degree. Ellis was taken to the Dent County Jail. On Saturday, January 1st at 1:35 early in the morning, 36 year-old John C. Dotson was arrested on a Dent County warrant for two felony counts of statutory sodomy in the 1st degree and two felony counts of child endangerment in the 1st degree. Dotson was taken to the Dent County Jail.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will host St. Clair tonight starting at 6:00 with the JV contest with the varsity game to follow. You can hear the varsity game on KSMO and online at ksmoradio.com at about 7:10.

Michael Bush and rookie Jacoby Ford both ran for a touchdown to help the Raiders close out the regular season with a 31-10 victory over the AFC West- champion Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. Matt Cassel had 115 yards on 11-of-33 efficiency with two fourth-quarter interceptions for the Chiefs (10-6), who will enter the postseason as the No. 4 seed and will host the Baltimore Ravens in a wild-card game.

Charlie Whitehurst threw for 192 yards and a touchdown, helping Seattle clinch the NFC West title with a 16-6 victory over division rival St. Louis. The Rams (7-9) led the Seahawks by a game entering Sunday's contest and could have spared the NFL a sub-.500 team in the playoffs. But because Seattle holds the better division mark, the Seahawks became the first team in league history with a losing record to reach the postseason. Sam Bradford finished 19-of-36 for 155 yards with an interception, while Steven Jackson carried the ball 11 times for 45 yards for the Rams.

Brenden Morrow tallied a pair of goals to back a 28-save performance from Kari Lehtonen as Dallas downed St. Louis, 4-2, at Scottrade Center coming back in the third period for the win against the Blues. David Backes and Alex Steen posted first-period goals for the Blues, who saw their five-game win streak snapped. Jaroslav Halak took the loss after yielding all four scores on 27 shots.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley confirmed that offensive coordinator Charlie Weis is going to the University of Florida to lead the offense under new Gators head coach Will Muschamp after the playoffs.

Funeral services for Velma E. Wofford of Salem, age 90, will be held today at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery in Salem.

Funeral services for Shirley M. Crabtree of Rolla, age 82, will be held Tuesday at 12:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be held from 10:00 until service time Tuesday. Interment will be in the Ozark Hill Memorial Gardens in Rolla. Memorials may be made to the Phelps County Regional Hospice.

Funeral services for Herple W. Craine of Rolla, age 88, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary of Rolla. Visitation will be held Tuesday night from 5:00 until 7:00.

Funeral services for Fannie Marie Ware of Cherryville, age 87, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 Tuesday. Interment will be in the Delhi Cemetery in Cuba, Missouri.

Funeral services for Diane Lynn Vance of Salem, age 64, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Tuesday. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery in Jadwin. Memorials may be made to the Dent County Animal Shelter.
