The Missouri Foundation for Health (MFH) announces four new members to its Board of Directors, along with the re-election of a current member. The 15-member Board of Directors provides oversight of all MFH activities and grant making. Directors may serve a maximum of two three-year terms. The four new board members are: Brenda A. Battle, of Bridgeton; Gretchen Garrison, JD, of St. Louis; Dorothy M. Munch, DO, of Poplar Bluff; and Janna L. Stewart, JD, of Ava. Re-elected to the board is George F. Gruendel, PhD, of Salem. Gruendel, who first was elected to the MFH board in March 2007, has 38 years experience in management. He continues to provide consultant services and training in human resource development. As executive director of Dent County Healthy Communities, he facilitated a community-wide effort to identify and develop solutions to community health issues as part of a project funded by the National Rural Health Association and the U.S. Department of Health. He also served as a consultant to the Missouri Department of Mental Health to develop a comprehensive mental health plan for southeast Missouri. He is an adjunct professor at Webster University in Rolla and Ft. Leonard Wood. Established in 2000, MFH is the largest non-governmental funder of community health activities in the state. MFH is in its sixth year of grant making, having issued more than $265 million in grants and awards to date. It is dedicated to serving the uninsured and underserved in 84 Missouri counties and the City of St. Louis. For more information about MFH, visit www.mfh.org.
Do you want to be in charge of who gets your assets after you’re gone? Are you concerned about what your estate will cost your heirs? What are the best tools available to plan my estate how I want? These are just a few of the questions that will be answered at the Personal, Farm & Small Business Estate Planning Workshop series that is being held on consecutive Tuesdays, January 15th, 22nd and 29th. The sessions will begin at 6:00 p.m. and run until 9:00 p.m. at the Salem TCRC. The cost to attend is $45 per person or $55 per couple or single business entity (one set of materials). Pre-registration is required by January 10th. Due to the fact that farmers and businesses have some very unique estate issues, these sessions are geared to their specific needs. The major increase in asset values, especially land, in the last several years has made this topic even more critical of late. Session 1 will discuss Why Plan Your Estate; Who Should Be Involved; What Materials You’ll Need; Property Ownership and Business Organization and Choosing Advisors, including attorneys. Session 2 is on Probate Here in Missouri; Estate and Gift Taxes and An Introduction to Estate Planning Tools. Session 3 will finish up with Estate Planning Tools and discuss Communication Issues with Family and others. You need to attend all 3 sessions of this class. The Salem Tigers started out the 2008 year with a fairly easy win over licking Wednesday night as they bat the Wildcats, 68-31. Salem wa sled in scoring by Cody Wofford with 15 points followed by C. J. Smith with 14 points. Zack Moser and Taylor Sirois each added nine points in the Tiger victory which puts them at 8-4 on the year. Tonight, the Salem Tigers will face the St. Clair Bulldogs in a makeup game from the December 15th game that was snowed out. The JV action begins at 6:00 followed by the varsity game. The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will have their first game of the new year as they face the St. James Lady Tigers tonight starting at 6:00 with the JV contest with the varsity game to follow. Salem is 10-1 on the year.
Dustin Penner's power-play goal with 18 seconds left in overtime lifted the Edmonton Oilers to a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues at the Scottrade Center. David Perron and David Backes scored for the Blues, who have lost nine of their last 12 games. Manny Legace turned aside three shots in the first period before leaving the game with a head injury. Hannu Toivonen finished the game with 18 saves. The Blues will host Carolina Saturday night.
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards cleaned house on Wednesday, firing offensive coordinator Mike Solari, offensive line coachJohn Matsko, wide receivers coach Charlie Joiner, and running backs coach James Saxon. The moves came just days after the Chiefs finished the 2007 season with an overtime loss tothe New York Jets which completed a 4-12 season -- the franchise's worst since Marv Levy guided the team to the same record in 1978. Solari joined the team in 1997 as offensive line coach, and was eventually promoted to offensive coordinator in 2006.

Funeral services for Marie Pavy of Salem, age 86, will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 at James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.
Funeral services for James E. Albright of Rolla, age 93, will be held Saturday at noon at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the ST. James Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
Funeral services for Carl Lynn Pogue of Salem, age 44, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from noon until service time. Interment will be private.
Funeral services for Lester Broccard of Willow Springs, age 93, will be held Saturday at 3:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be from 1:00 until service time, with a Masonic Service at 2:00. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church of Rolla or the Pomona Christian Church of Pamona or charity of your choice.
Funeral services for Clarence Elmer Perry of Rolla, age 70, will be held Monday, January 7th at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Rhea Cemetery in Phelps County.
Funeral services for Ruth E. Coplen of St. James, age 66, are incomplete at this time. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James.
