The City of Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Tuesday night at the city hall council chambers. In unfinished business, the board heard from John Lester with the Missouri Public Utility Alliance regarding the apprentice lineman and mutual aid programs. The yearly membership cost for this alliance is $3,900. The board postponed a decision on membership until the next meeting. Doug Barnes, President of the Park Board, presented a list of four recommendations for the aldermen to consider. They include considering to budget money for the covering of the ditch area near the new t-ball fields at the park to allow for additional parking. Mayor Brown suggested that this could be done in July or August of this year. They also requested approval to develop the area in the lot across the street from the Salem Freedom Activity Center building for a batting cage area. Alderman McDaniels had some concerns about putting the cages across Route J and children having to cross the street. Barnes recommended allowing geo-caching at the city park, and recommended purchasing and placing protective covers for the fluorescent lights that are located above the basketball/volleyball area at the Salem Freedom Activity Center. Barnes also reported that the city pool will need a new filter tank in the near future and Alderman Riley requested that bids be sought at this time, before summer pool season begins. Alderman Riley requested that West Eighth Street between Jackson and Henderson Streets, and Rolla Road between Henderson Street and St. John’s Mercy Medical Clinic, be added to the list for sidewalk improvements. He also asked about getting a traffic mirror put at the dangerous intersection near Iron Mountain Road and East Third Street. Alderman McDaniels requested that work on street signs be done throughout the city and that city employees remove dead animals more frequently. Mayor Brown explained that the new wastewater treatment plant’s operating permit has new restrictions and guidelines added. Additional testing will need to be done and this must be reflected in the upcoming budget. Brown reported that the sewer lines on Third Street, Center Street and Carty Streets are all being videoed. The Road Rally will again be held in Salem the end of February. All races will start from Salem this year and ESPN will again be present. Brown also said that the street department is working on building a new road of off Route HH to the new soccer fields and that DNR has given an extension on their grant to allow more time to get scoreboards installed. The grant has been extended until May 15, 2007. After approving the bills, the board then went into closed session to discuss real estate and litigation.

Coach Travis Wrightsman registered his 100th career win in Salem as the Salem Tigers downed the Licking Wildcats by the score of 67 to 48. Salem was led by Solomon McNeal with 22 points followed by Taylor Sirois with 17 points and C.J. Smith netted 10 more. Licking was led by Pat Matson with 17 points followed by Brady Shepherd and Kyle Brunkhorst with 13 points each. Salem is now 4-7 on the year and they will be at St. Clair Friday night.
Stefhon Hannah tallied a career-high 27 points and dished out five assists in guiding the Missouri Tigers to an 83-75 triumph over the Mississippi State Bulldogs in non-conference action from Columbia. Hannah added five rebounds and five steals, as the Tigers (11-2) stretched their home winning streak to 12 games. Matt Lawrence contributed 17 points and six rebounds for Missouri, which delivered head coach Mike Anderson his 100th career victory. Missouri won the battle on the boards, 42-32, including a 13-6 edge on the offensive glass. The Tigers also scored 31 of their points off 24 Mississippi State turnovers in the win. The Tigers have now won 18 straight non-conference home games, marking their longest run of non-league home victories since winning 18 in a row over the 2000-03 seasons. Missouri will face Iowa State on Saturday.
Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 38 shots, as the Chicago Blackhawks used a four-goal third-period blitz to upend the St. Louis Blues, 4-1 in the front end of a two-game series at Scottrade Center. Martin Havlat, Peter Bondra, Jeff Hamilton and Martin Lapointe tallied for the Blackhawks, who broke a two-game slide. Tuomo Ruutu and Denis Arkhipov each added two assists. Keith Tkachuk scored the lone goal for the Blues, who lost for the second time in their last seven games. Manny Legace stopped 22 shots on the night, dropping to 10-11-4 on the year. The teams will play again in St. Louis on Thursday night at 7:00 on KSMO Radio.

Funeral services for Dennis Parker of Bunker, age 53, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will be at the Greeley Untied Baptist Church in Bunker tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Greeley Cemetery. Memorials suggested to the Greeley Cemetery fund.
Funeral services for Virginia Piazza of St. James, age 99, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the Immaculate Conception Church in St. James. Interment will be in the Rosati Cemetery. Visitation will be tonight from 4:00 to 8:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in St. James. Memorials are suggested to the Rosati Cemetery or for mass.
Funeral services for Barbara Jane Comfort of O’Fallon, formerly of Davisville, age 48, will be Thursday evening at 7:30 pm at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 Wednesday. No interment was given.
