The Dent County Extension Council met on December 8th at the Dent County Extension Office Boardroom. At the meeting, the board approved to increase Cary Terrill’s pay to $10.15 per hour effective May of 2015. The extension received seven applicants for the part-time secretary position. The personnel committee and staff will conduct the interviews. The election for the extension open board positions will be held January 5th through the 9th. The council approved holding the annual banquet at the Grace Community Church on February 24th. The meeting was then adjourned.

Captain James W. Remillard, commanding officer of Troop I, announced that on January 4, 2015, troopers will be conducting a Click It Or Ticket enforcement campaign for the entire Phelps County area in Troop I. This operation is part of a national effort to help increase awareness of the importance of wearing a seat belt and properly restraining your child in an approved child safety seat. 

On Monday, November 24th, 530 Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes left New Harmony Church in Salem and began their journey into the hands of many special children all around the world. The boxes were collected during the National Collection Week of November 17th –24th. Many individuals, families, churches, and groups participated in this worldwide mission project. Among the churches that contributed to the cause were the Liberty Baptist Church, New Hope Presbyterian Church, First Baptist Church of Centerville, Shannondale Church, Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Corinth Baptist Church, Oak Grove Baptist Church, and New Harmony Church. Since 1993, Samaritan’s Purse has collected and delivered more than 113 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in over 150 countries through Operation Christmas Child. In 2014, Samaritan’s Purse hopes to collect enough shoebox gifts to reach another 10 million children through the Operation Christmas Child project.

The Salem Police Department has submitted recent activity reports. On Saturday, December 20th at 8:15 in the morning an officer was contacted at the Salem Police Department about a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown had taken Christmas decorations valued at $50.00 from a yard in the 300 block of East Roosevelt. At 11:08 that evening a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. That investigation led to the arrest of a 22-year old male from Roby, Missouri for driving while being drugged. The suspect was issued a summons to appear in court and released. At 2:23 in the morning on Sunday December 21st a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 24-year old male of Salem for driving while intoxicated and on two active arrest warrants from the City of Salem. The suspect was issued a summons to appear in court and incarcerated pending a court appearance. At 6:30 that evening an office was contacted at the Salem Police Department in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown stole fuel valued at $195.00 from a tan Peterbuilt truck parked near Highway 19 and Rolla Road. Later at 8:12 that evening an officer was detailed to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation revealed that an unidentified male wearing a red hoodie and jeans walked out of the store with merchandise valued at $299.99. Four Salem Tigers scored in double figures as the Salem Boys Basketball Tigers snapped their four game losing streak with a 69-59 win over the Warrensburg Tigers. Zayne Kyser led the way with 16 points followed by Logan Pogue with 15. Zack Elliott and Logan Wolfe each netted 13 for Salem as they improve to 5-5 going into 2015. The Boys will be off until January 13th when they host the Sullivan Eagles.

Missouri’s Maty Mauk rebounded from two early interceptions to lead the 16th-ranked Tigers over the Minnesota Golden Gophers, 33-17, in the Citrus Bowl. Mauk completed 12-of-19 passes for 97 yards and two touchdowns for the Tigers (11-3), who recorded 11 wins for the fourth time in program history. He also carried the ball 11 times for 38 yards and a score. Marcus Murphy carried the ball 12 times for 157 yards for Missouri, which has won its last three bowl games. Russell Hansbrough rushed for 114 yards and a score on 15 carries. Bud Sasser caught seven passes for 68 yards and two touchdowns in the victory.

The St. Louis Blues will be in Anaheim tonight to face the Ducks starting at 8:30 as they continue their four game road trip. The Blues have lost five of their last six games. The Blues will then be in San Jose to face the Sharks Saturday night starting at 9:00. You can hear both games on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game shows.

The Missouri Basketball Tigers lost to Oklahoma State Tuesday night in overtime by the score of 74-72. Jonathan Williams III led Missouri with 22 points. Missouri will face Lipscomb Saturday afternoon starting at 3:30. You can hear that game on KSMO Radio.

The Kansas City Royals on Monday announced they have signed pitcher Edinson Volquez to a two-year contract with a mutual option for 2017. Volquez spent 2014 with Pittsburgh and had a record of 13-7 and a 3.04 ERA in 32 games, all but one as a starter. The American League-champion Royals had been in need of another starting pitcher with the loss of James Shields to free agency. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Royals designated infielder Ryan Jackson for assignment.

Kansas City Royals outfielder Alex Gordon had wrist surgery on Tuesday, but should be ready by spring training. The procedure repaired the extensor retinaculum in Gordon's right wrist, which bothered the All-Star left fielder for most of the 2014 season.

Funeral services for Dormalea (Evans) Trolinger Gibson, age 74, of Salem will be Saturday at 11:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking.  Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00.  Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.  All arrangements are under the direction of the Fox Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Susan A. Florence of Salem, age 70, will be held Monday morning at 11:00 at the Salem Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time Monday. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Susan Florence funeral fund.

Graveside services for Stanley B. Derryberry, age 67, will be Tuesday at 1:00 at the North Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:00 to 1:00 at the Salem Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. All arrangements are under the direction of James and Gahr Mortuary of Salem. 

Funeral services for Delores Mae Brazzle of Rolla, age 75, will be held at 1:00 Tuesday at the Rolla Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be held Monday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Macedonia Cemetery in Rolla.

Funeral services for Harriet Ruth Crouch of Salem, age 83, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 11:00 Tuesday morning until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Church of God.
