The Ozark Heritage Project is sponsoring a boat riding and fish gigging opportunity beginning at 1:00 this Saturday afternoon at the Pulltite Campground in north Shannon County. The campground is located off Highway 19 south, on Route EE to the Current River. The boat riding and fish gigging opportunity will be held at the river access. The boat rides will be free and there will be refreshments available including water, soda, hot dogs, and then fried yellow suckers and potatoes. The National Park Service is proposing Alternative B for the new Draft General Management Plan for the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, and part of the new restrictions include a year round ban on outboard motors on upper Current River and upper Jacks Fork. The boats that will be made available to all guests are the very ones they wish to exclude. The Ozark Heritage Project is presenting this opportunity so that more people can make informed decisions as to their comments on the new proposals. There will be no charge, but if anyone actually wants to gig that evening, they must have a valid Missouri Fishing License. People not wishing to actually take fish can still ride along and witness the sport firsthand. Life jackets will be provided.  All of the activities will conclude around 9:00 PM. If you have any questions or want more information about the boat rides or gigging, contact Rick Mansfield at 573-663-2269, or send him an e-mail at emansfield2004@yahoo.com. Reservations are NOT necessary, but some idea of the number participating will better ensure their ability to have enough boats and food.

On Friday, December 27th, Dent County deputies responded to North Rhodes Street for a stolen property investigation. During the investigation, consent to search the residence was granted. As a result of the search, numerous plastic baggies were found. Two of the baggies contained a plant matter that field tested positive for Marijuana.  Also found in a separate baggie was a crystalline substance that field-tested positive for Methamphetamine. The crystalline substance weighed approximately 1 gram. As a result of the items found, 35-year old James Howard of Salem and 26-year old Jessica Dodson of Salem were arrested on Tuesday, December 31st. Both Howard and Dodson were incarcerated in the Dent County Jail pending the issuance of warrants. Howard’s bond has been set at $10,000 cash only.  Dodson’s bond has been set at $7,000 cash only. Both are being charged with possession of a controlled substance, Methamphetamine.

State Auditor Tom Schweich released the audit of the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). As reported in a prior audit, the MDC did not prepare a complete and accurate estimate of costs to reintroduce elk in the state. The approved project budget anticipated spending $411,000 to bring 150 elk into Missouri, but as of June 30, 2011, the MDC had spent over $1.23 million to reintroduce elk. Two years later, excluding salaried personnel costs, the MDC has now spent $3.382 million (including $1.424 from federal grants and private donations) to release 129 elk. The MDC provided pay raises not provided to other state employees. The conservation commission authorized a two percent cost of living adjustment to most employees with 18 or more months of service in July 2012 and three other two percent raises through fiscal year 2014. The MDC also provided a total of $54,036 in increases to two deputy directors and four division chiefs, who also received the annual and anniversary increases, and gave the department director, who did not receive the other increases, salary increases totaling $20,004, a 17 percent increase.

An accident occurred at 8:30 Wednesday morning in Crawford County on Highway 49 about eight miles north of Viburnum. According to the highway patrol report, 15-year old Lorenzo McGee of Viburnum was driving a 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier south when the vehicle traveled off the left side of the roadway, struck an embankment, went airborne through a fence, struck the ground, and overturned. McGee and an occupant, 18-year old Wesley Utech of Steelville, suffered minor injuries and were taken to by ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Neither individual was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet was totaled and removed from the scene by the owner.
