A reception honoring Sheriff Bob Wofford was held this past Tuesday on the third floor conference room of the Judicial Building. The Honorable J. Max Price presented Sheriff Wofford with the Dent County Sheriff's Department Leadership Medal and the Department Superior Service Medal. Missouri State Representative Jason Smith presented Wofford with resolutions from the Missouri House and Senate honoring him for his service and dedication during his 16 years as Dent County Sheriff. Missouri State Highway Patrol Captain LeAnn Kinley presented Sheriff Wofford with a Certificate of Appreciation for his work and cooperation with the patrol through the years. Presiding Judge William Camm Seay and staff members of the sheriff's department and representatives of the staff in the Judicial Building also made presentations to Sheriff Wofford. Following the presentations to Wofford an awards ceremony was held and Sheriff Wofford presented plaques and certificates to the staff of the Dent County Sheriff's Department. Sergeant Mike Warren was presented the department service medal for 15 years of service to the Dent County Sheriff's Department as well as the Sheriff's Achievement Plaque. Dispatchers Joe Aldridge and John Elmer were presented the Department Service Medal for 20 years of service to the department as well as Sheriff's Department Certificates of Achievement. Commendation medals were awarded to Sergeants Rodney Jackson and George Ball and to Deputies Michael Letchworth and Justin Roderman.  The Sheriff's Distinguished Service Medal and retired law enforcement card was awarded to retiring Sergeant Dale Roberts; Deputies Michael Nivens and Wayne Becker and Sheriff's Office Administrator Norma Simmons were awarded the Sheriff's Achievement Plaque.  The Dent County Sheriff's Department Certificates of Achievement were awarded to Deputies Rich Piatt, Scott Montoya, Marvin Rice, Rodney Lewis, Steve Lawhead and to Jailer Beverly Irons, Dispatchers Judy Wilmont, Mary Lou Burns and Jim Boulware.

The Dent County Service Unit of The Salvation Army would like to announce that they have raised a total of $20,994.87 successfully exceeding this year’s Christmas Campaign goal of $20,000. The local Salvation Army Board and this year’s Christmas Campaign Chair, Liz Gruendel, would like to thank everyone who made monetary donations at the kettles or through the local mail appeal. They also extend their greatest appreciation to the dedicated volunteers that took time out of their busy holiday season to ring the bells at the kettles. Your continued generosity will be distributed throughout 2009 to those less fortunate in Dent County.             

Candidates wishing to file for the East Ward Aldermanic or West Ward Aldermanic seats in the City of Salem, which are two-year terms, have until Tuesday, January 20th at 5:00. Incumbent Jim Jackson has filed for the East Ward Aldermanic seat as well as Edgar Gray, Sr. Filing for the West Ward Aldermanic seat are Brad Nash and Michael Thompson. Aldermen must be 21-years of age, a citizen of the United States, and they must be a resident of the city for at least one year. The filing fee is $25. Declaration of Candidacy may be filed with the City Clerk located at 400 North Iron between the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Declaration of Candidacy received shall be placed on the ballet for the April 7th election in the order they are received. Filings for the Salem R-80 Board of Education have started and will end on Tuesday, January 20th at 5:00 pm. There are three terms available, two 3-year terms and one 2-year term. To date, incumbent Chris Heaven has filed for one of the 3-year terms and Carrie Coffman-Snider has also filed for one of the 3-year terms. Incumbent Joe Howard has filed for the 2-year term. Those interested in filing for the Salem R-80 Board of Education can do so during at the Central Office during regular hours from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday. The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers dropped their third straight game on Wednesday afternoon as they dropped a 65-59 decision to the Rolla Bulldogs in the US Bank Holiday Tournament. Salem was led in scoring by Zach Pitchford and Grant Gordon with 13 points each, followed by C.J. Smith with 12 points and Cody Wofford with 11 points. Salem is now 3-6 on the year and they will travel to West Plains Saturday afternoon at 5:00 for a make-up game with the Zizzers. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com.

In the US Bank Invitational Holiday Tournament held in Rolla this week, C.J. Smith was named to the All-Tournament Team. Congratulations CJ!

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers defeated Buffalo Wednesday at the Lebanon Tournament by the score of 49-41. Salem improved to 4-5 on the year with the win and they will also be going to West Plains Saturday afternoon for a game with the Lady Zizzers at 2:00.

The St. Louis Blues will be back in action tonight as they travel to Carolina to face the Hurricane starting at 6:00. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio. The Blues have lost four of their last five games.

The Missouri Basketball Tigers will host Georgia Saturday with the tip off starting at noon. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting at 11:30. Missouri is 11-2 on the year.

Funeral services for Olamarie Hedrick of Salem, age 79, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. An Eastern Star service will be held at 7:00 tonight. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Eastern Star or Shriner’s Hospital.

Funeral services for Joe Sutton of Edgar Springs, age 71, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Visitation will be from 11:00 am until service time. Interment will be in the Hutchason Cemetery.

Funeral services for Arthur Harold Stringfield of Viburnum, age 63, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will also be Monday from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family for funeral expenses.
