The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. At the meeting, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 408, 544, 663 and 667 weather permitting. Simpson also said that crewmembers would be picking up the dura-patcher in St. Genevieve. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done on white rock roads around Salem and gravel would be hauled to roads with a lot of mud. The rest of the crew would be taking spreader boxes off trucks. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended a 100 Acre Road Rally meeting last Thursday and at that meeting rally chairmen Tom Vanhatten said the rally would return to Salem in 2009. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to remind everyone that the last day to register to vote for the February 5
th election is January 9
th and if anyone has had an address change to please call the clerks office at 729-4144. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
An accident happened at 12:05 Saturday morning in Phelps County on Route U five miles north of St. James. According to the highway patrol report, a 1995 Dodge driven by 54-year old Alan Kastendieck of St. James was northbound and traveled off the left side of the road. The 1995 Dodge struck a tree and fence. Alan left the scene and called for an ambulance from his residence. He suffered from serious injuries and was taken by ambulance from the residence to Phelps County Regional Medical Center. The 1995 Dodge sustained minor damage and was removed from the scene later by the owner. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.
An accident happened Tuesday afternoon in Dent County on Highway 32 about a mile west of the Dent and Iron County lines. According to the highway patrol report, a Freightliner Tractor Trailer Unit driven westbound by 49-year old Kevin Moore of Stark City, Missouri, ran off the left side of the roadway, struck several trees before the vehicle came to rest. Moore suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by the Iron County Ambulance. The vehicle was totaled and was removed from the scene by Miles Towing of Steelville. Moore was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.
An accident happened on New Year’s Day morning at 9:20 in Texas County about two miles north of Licking. According to the highway patrol, a 1985 Pontiac driven southbound by 17-year old Megan Drew of Edgar Springs, skidded out of control on the snow covered roadway and went off the roadway and struck an embankment. Suffering minor injuries were Drew and a passenger in the vehicle, 17-year old William Callahan of Licking. Both were taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by a private vehicle. The Pontiac sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by the owner. Both Drew and Callahan were wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident.

Tony Temple rushed for 281 yards and four touchdowns, both Cotton Bowl records, as No. 7 Missouri trounced No. 25 Arkansas, 38-7. Temple accomplished both feats on 24 attempts, breaking the old mark of 265 yards and three scores set by Rice's Dicky Maegle in 1954. Heisman Trophy finalist Chase Daniel completed 12-of-29 passes for 136 yards with one interception for Missouri (12-2), which rebounded from a disappointing blowout loss to Oklahoma in the Big 12 championship game. Will Franklin had five grabs for 77 yards, and William Moore had an interception return for a score and a forced fumble for the Tigers, playing in their first New Year's Day bowl since 1970, and their first Cotton Bowl since 1946.
Manny Legace stopped all 31 shots he faced to help St. Louis beat the Red Wings on Monday, 2-0, and hand Detroit its first shutout of the season, at Joe Louis Arena. Erik Johnson and Lee Stempniak scored for St. Louis, which snapped a four-game losing streak. Legace, who played six seasons with the Red Wings, recorded his second shutout of the season and the 20th of his career. Additionally, the Blues shut out the Red Wings in Detroit for the first time since January 11, 1993. The Blues will be home tonight to face the Edmonton Oilers. KSMO will join the game in progress after Salem basketball.
Salem will face the Licking Wildcats tonight at Licking to start out the new year. The JV action will begin at 6:00 followed by the varsity game. You can hear the varsity game on KSMO and on www.ksmoradio.com at about 7:15. The Boys are 7-4 on the year.
Salem and St. Clair have rescheduled the snowed out game with St. Clair for this Thursday starting at the Salem High School Gym with the JV game at 6:00.
The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will be at St. James tomorrow night starting at 6:00.

Funeral services for Adolph J. Mueller of St. James, age 75, will be held Thursday morning at 10:30 at the St. John Lutheran Church in St. James. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 8:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Hospice or the St. John Lutheran Church.
Funeral services for Private Jeremy Michael Black of Salem, age 18, serving in the United States Army at Fort Bragg, North Carolina will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery with full Military Honors.
Funeral services for Mary Evelyn Wills of St. Charles, formerly of Rolla, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Gardens in Rolla. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Funeral services for Myrtle C. Rowan of House Springs, age 94, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 1:00 until service time on Thursday. Interment will be in the Stone Hill Cemetery.
Funeral services for Gene Hagler of Licking, age 85, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Licking. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Fox Chapel. Interment will be in the Licking Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the United Community Help Center in Licking.
Funeral services for Marie Pavy of Salem, age 86, will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 at James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Interment will be in the North lawn Cemetery.
Funeral services for James E. Albright of Rolla, age 93, will be held Saturday, January 5th at noon at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the ST. James Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
Funeral services for Clarence Elmer Perry of Rolla, age 70, will be held Monday, January 7th at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Rhea Cemetery in Phelps County.
