The City of Salem Board of Alderman will hold their regular meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 7:00 pm. After roll call and the hearing of persons will be the approval of the consent agenda, which will include the approval of the minutes from the previous meeting as well as reports from various department. In unfinished business, at the November 20th board meeting, the board postponed any decision concerning joining the Missouri Public Utility Alliance until they could talk to Mr. Lester again. The Board is interested in their apprentice lineman and the mutual aid programs and will be addressed. In reports of city officials, boards and committees, Doug Barnes will update the Board on the Park Board’s last meeting. Alderman Bill Riley, Jim McDaniels, Mike Whitley and Jim Jackson will discuss miscellaneous items involving the city and Mayor Gary Brown will then give his comments. After the approval of bills, the Board will then go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel, real estate and litigation. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

An accident occurred on Sunday around 3:45 in the afternoon in Dent County on Route YY about 15 miles southwest of Salem.  According to the highway patrol report, a 1992 GMC van driven by Matthew Johnston, age 27 of Salem, failed to negotiate a curve and traveled off the right edge of the roadway. The driver then over-corrected and the vehicle again ran off the road and came to rest in a ditch. Johnston suffered moderate injuries and was transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by the Salem ambulance. The vehicle sustained extensive damage and was removed by the owner.  Johnston was wearing a seat restraint when the accident occurred. He was cited for driving while intoxicated, careless and imprudent driving and for operating a vehicle without a valid operating license.

An accident occurred on Sunday around 5:40 in the morning in Crawford County on Camel Hump Road about 7 miles north of Viburnum.  According to the highway patrol report, a 2001 Ford Escape driven by Heidi Norris, age 25, of Salem traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. Norris received minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial Hospital by Iron County Ambulance. The vehicle sustained moderate damages and was towed by Abney’s Towing. Norris was wearing a seat belt when the accident occurred.

The Salem Police Department has reported several calls over the last few days. On December 19th, at approximately 10:32 a.m., a call was received reporting a theft of a Stihl chainsaw valued at $300, and a Delta power miter valued at $150 from a building in the 500 block of North Pershing.  The report is still under investigation.  On December 21st, at approximately 6:15 a.m., an officer was called to the William Lynch Elementary School in reference to property damage. Investigation revealed a window broken in the boy’s bathroom near the entrance of the building. The damage estimate is $50, and the incident is under investigation. Another property damage report occurred that day at 8:02 a.m. at McCoy’s Vision Center.  Someone had broken out the entrance door glass and custom glass windowpane. The value of damage is at $1,500, and is under investigation.  The last property damage report was at Ron’s Detail Shop at 8:42 a.m. on December 26th.  An unknown suspect damaged a vehicle taillight assembly on a white 2002 Pontiac Grand Am that was parked on the lot. The value of damage is $150, and the incident is under investigation. 

Southern Reynolds County School students know the importance of buckling up.  This school participated in the statewide Battle of the Belt, an educational program where high schools competed against each other to increase safety belt use and potentially save lives. The challenge involved an initial surprise safety belt check of students followed by a peer-designed educational blitz and a final surprise safety belt check to see if a change in behavior occurred. More than 100 schools participated Southern Reynolds County won the award for the greatest percentage increase of safety belt usage by the end of the program. The Missouri Department of Transportation recently conducted a study showing only 56% of Missouri teenagers wear safety belts.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers finished the 2006 season with a 55-41 win over Buffalo to capture third place in the Lebanon Tournament. Allison Jones led the Lady Tigers with 23 points followed by Natalie Howard with 14 and Kirsten Stephens with 12. Salem is 10-2 on the year.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers dropped an 84-76 decision last Friday against the Cougars of Jackson central Merry. Salem was led by in scoring by Jordan Davis with 21 points followed by CJ Smith with 15, Matt Whitaker with 14 and Brad Lewis with 13 points respectively. Salem is 3-7 on the year and they will be back in action tonight at 6:00 against the Licking Wildcats with the JV game. The varsity game will follow and you can hear the game on KSMO at 7:20.

The Missouri Basketball Tigers snapped a two-game losing streak with a convincing 87-58 win over Southern Saturday night. Matt Lawrence scored 24 points to lead the Tigers followed by Keon Lawrence with 17 points and Stefhon Hannah with 13 points and six steals. Missouri is now 10-2 and they will face Mississippi State tonight starting at 6:30. The game will be interrupted on KSMO by Salem Tiger Basketball, but the entire second half can be heard after the Salem game.

Matt Moore threw for 356 yards and four touchdowns and 24th ranked Oregon State came from behind to beat Missouri, 39-38, in the 73rd annual Sun Bowl. Moore was named the MVP by going 31-54 passing. Chase Daniel threw for 330 yards on 16-29 passing, and Tony Temple raced for 194 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns. Missouri finished the year with an 8-6 record after starting the year 6-0.

Manny Legace cast aside all 33 shots he faced Saturday night to record his first shutout of the season and anchor St. Louis' 2-0 win over Colorado. Legace was tested each period en route to improving to 5-0-1 in his last six starts. He turned aside 12 shots in the first, kept Colorado out of the net on four power plays in the second, and then stopped 13 shots in the third. Keith Tkachuk and Lee Stempniak both scored power-play goals for the Blues, who won their third straight home game and have a modest two-game overall winning streak. The Blues face the Chicago Black Hawks tonight and Thursday night. Tonight’s game will not be on KSMO, but the Thursday night game will be.

Funeral services for Rose Terrill of Rolla, age 84, will be held today at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Highgate Cemetery in Highgate. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for Mildred B. Rhinehart, age 84, of Pevely, Missouri, will be held at 10:00 on Wednesday, January 3 at Vineyard’s Hillcrest Funeral Home in Pevely, Missouri.  A graveside service will be held at 2:00 on Wednesday at North Lawn Cemetery in Salem.
